They identify talent so well because it's the same guy coaching in the same role in the same system for years (even decades). It's why Bobby Turner, Spagnolo, and Kris Kocurek are so good at it.

Kyle likes to move coaches between offense and defense to help them grow but there are downsides to that approach.

You're kidding me right? He doesn't like to do it. He has to do it. Do you think he likes needing a new DC every flipping year. I bet not. This is the reason I didn't like the Saleh hire this time. A one and done does nothing for us in the larger picture.

We will see how quickly he gets another head coaching job. He is a defensive coach who couldn't figure out the offense in NY & he had multiple opportunities to fix it. .

The key to being a successful HC is hiring good assistants. In Saleh's case ihe needed a good OC and he failed.

He tried to replicate the 49ers offense and fail. Looks like it didn't work out for Ryan either. There is only one Shanahan.

Yes, I think he sees it as successful talent development. When teams are raiding your coaching staff every offseason that means you're killing it.

I've said 'What's up' to Saleh a couple times when he was with the 49ers. His son played against my son in rec league soccer. This is when they were both in elementary school. This past season, I was in NY doing a show for my work. I saw Saleh walking in the tunnel and said what's up to him. He completely ignored me lol. Gameface was in full effect so I understand. They ended up winning that Thursday Night game over the Patriots.

This is why I didn't want to bring him back as our DC.

haha. It was about 5-6 hours before gametime so I think he just got to the stadium and was walking towards the lockerrooms. He may have had headphones on, so maybe he didn't hear me. Anyway, he's a nice guy when I saw him on the soccer field hanging out on a weekend. I'm sure that's a different mindset than 5 hours before kickoff.
I can't say Im super excited, we all know what hes going to do and how he's going to do it. I don't really know of Saleh specific schemes, his one wrinkle was trying AA at LEO and it kinda failed. His defenses weren't good when there wasn't a stud-filled DL. His defenses also tend to be soft run defenses, which is why it was not surprising for Jets to just bend over and roll over to a Shanahan offense to start the season.

Just not a fan of "running it back" with far worse talent than before. These running it back attempts rarely if ever work in general, and they certainly don't work for the Niners. The league is always moving forward, not backwards.

Niners got themselves into a corner with this DC search, so anything aside from Saleh was probably going to be viewed, at least optics wise, as a failure. So I get it, but I can't be excited. Saleh is not the type of DC that can compensate for the lack of talent with his scheme. He's more of a "don't eff up, we play off talent" guy and I think that's not the right guy at this time at this place. But time will tell.

uh...Im not sure what to make of this statement. if we are tying positional coaches to identifying talent (which is pretty absurd in itself, since I think Kyle does 95% or more of the decision), Id argue Bobby turner and Kocurek are not good at it - it doesnt take a lot of talent to identify talent in CMC (after all pro seasons) or Nick Bosa, but the failures that were Thomas, Kinlaw, Drake Jackson, and numerous mid-rounder RBs who never amounted to anything in the league, in draft is quite glaring.

I feel the same. if we can't get the talent he needs. it will be up to the offense staying on the field longer to help the defense. I asked how long do people give him to see top 5 improvement and people got their feelings hurt.

I thought he did well during the 2020 season when Bosa was injured early, on top of other injuries. I agree that the league is moving forward, and overall, I feel defensive schemes are more aggressive with blitzing and disguising than in recent years. I hope Saleh adopts some of that. Simply lining up and playing straight up as the defensive scheme is not good enough.
