Only one time did they get outside on us and that was b/c Elijah Lee didn't contain his outside gap. Otherwise, everything was funneled inside which is to our strength en route to pressuring the QB which we clearly did all night long. Now picture that alignment with even better players...some of the best in the NFL.

You talk of the W9 having weaknesses? Sure, and we saw that when Lee didn't fill/contain. Our Big End/LEO also had weaknesses too...like Wilson and the outside zone marching down the field off tackle with ease. Or needing bigger personnel and not being able to rush the QB. LOL

My view is the wide 9 is not a balanced front. It's too *wide* and unbalanced - and again that's strictly because its purpose is as a pass rush scheme, which it is good at. To compensate for that, you slant/stunt/blitz against the run. Fine and dandy during pre-season, but once the regular season comes along and the regular players play, get in sych against the blitz and stunts, those things lose their effectiveness during the regular season.

I think the mindset on the wide 9 is that ShanaLynch is banking on Jimmy and this offense scoring a lot and the opposing team having to catch up using the pass. Now if that's the case a majority of the time, this will work. But if not, it can magnify any flaws in the Kyle offensive scheme and it will be a defensive setback, not an advancement and evolution. we shall see.

Was it too wide last night? If you weren't looking for it specifically, I bet you wouldn't have even noticed. It's literally just a shade over. The blitzes you are noting were against the pass. They rotated Day, Street, Taylor and Jones between the 2i and 3T. You're not running against that active beef.

We'll see against a great running team in the regular season but like you noted, if we happen to struggle, run blitzes are an option (better be called right though) or we can slide back into bigger end personnel if we need too. Flexible. Base and Nickel are married now.
For fun, last year against Dallas in the pre season with all our Big Ends and bigger SAM (29 carries for 105 yards and 3.6 average). This year with exclusive W9 for the first time with next to no starters (18 carries for 55 yards and 3.1 average).

Soooo, based on everything we've heard out of camp and now seen through the first preseason game, I think it's safe to say the wide 9 is now the base alignment.

My man.

Interesting how they used the run blitz to stop runs - at least from some of the highlight stuff I saw. That's one way to use the wide 9 to stop runs.

Yeah, Saleh was trying some interesting blitzes yesterday (against the pass; not run). But the W9 was fine against the run yesterday against a good running team in base as well. We just have good run defenders up front so we can run whatever we want. Damontre Moore played really well in it...the new ER we brought in too. Street, Day, Taylor all making waves inside. You could get a hint of how fun it's going to be with a healthy Ford - Day - Buckner - Bosa.

It was a little bit stunning to see our non starter DL ...look like starters. Sure they were rough around the edges, but those guys played well. It just solidifies what was our one best unit last yr...the DL...and now, our guys in rotation are beginning to look like starters. Early on it looks like we will have a DL not with just all pros on it but also really great talent in rotation. Those guys all comported themselves well last nite. What is this DL going to look like with real all pros in Bosa, Buck, Dee and Solomon/AA.? All our guys last nite on that DL played well...including one guy who was literally a walk on (DaMontre).

Yup and Sheldon Day has been the 2i since day 1 and he looked really good and comfortable there. If he was in last year's scheme, he'd be cut/inactive again.

He redeemed himself later though for a slant inside for a TFL.

I wasn't very impressed with Salehs 3rd and short wide 9 run defense in the first half. They couldn't stop the Dallas run game without bringing up the LB's and loading up against the run, or run blitzing. I'll see how they did in the 2nd half tommorrow.

Defense could be special...IF they get and stay healthy.

What stood out the most to me was how the guys were flying around. There were always gang tackles. A lot of passion there.

Tackling was surprisingly good yesterday. I guess Kyle's approach is working.

Thought Azeez Al-Shaair played a good game

That ejection on (Adrein Colbert???) I remember the guys name, looked the same as the hit in the 4th quarter - but there were no flags on that second hit. I really don't get this *hit against a defenseless player rule.* First of all it's not applied consistently, second of all, how the heck to do even figure out who's defenseless? Stupid rule. Personally, I think the better approach is to increase player health insurance, and more funding for concussion science. WR's who play football are putting themselves in danger of a concussion. If they don't want a concussion, don't play football. I think the NFL is making a rule that a rule cant be made for, in my opinion.

thl,

Did you see how the new three stack LBs in base affect our cover 3? I forgot to watch for this during the broadcast and didn't record the game. Is the SAM still dropping all the way to the flat in cover 3?

Exum's was more of an oops-too-much-momentum shove with his shoulder/forearm.
Colbert didn't seem to even know where the ball was and was going for a knockout all the way.

Well that's the other peeve I have. If the NFL is going to put stupid rules like this on the defense, the defense has to adjust to having more *cover* guys vs Hitters at the free safety position. In other words, what good is it to hit and get penalized or ejected vs having more of an Akhello cover guys that at least has the speed and agility to knock the ball away vs hit the guy and force him to drop the ball and get penalized and ejected.

Been like that for awhile now. Remember Hitner? Guy would've been great in the '80s but in the '10s he got flagged for hits a lot.
