That's what worries me. We overpaid for essentially a rotational player who is going to be a starter.

Some have mentioned he has been poor against the run in Miami because of the Wide 9 scheme they run. So hopefully I am wrong and he excels here. I don't think paying for another NT in FA is a smart strategy.

He was being misused in Miami so I wouldnt worry about that so much. His skill set will be utilized much better with our defense and should allow him to flourish. I think we got a deal on him actually. Im betting he has a big year for us and outplays his contract.

The Texans' defense averaged 4.2-yards allowed per carry when Mitchell was not on the field, but that allowed average dropped to 3.1 yards whenever Mitchell was out there.

Thats a difference maker no matter how you slice it.

Too low cost good signings and FA hasn't even started I like it

A million dollars is never peanuts in any scheme.
I don't see how this signing makes us any more likely (or less) to sign Allen. We weren't drafting a 1T at #2 and already have 1st rounders in Allen's position.

Also, we're not in a 3-4 anymore, and NT isn't AS big of a need. Don't get me wrong, I would have been a happier man with Williams or poe, but in the end, this is likely the smarter signing. Assuming buckner and armstead develop, we've already invested heavily in the "attackers" on D. By the time we are ready to compete, we aren't going to want to have that much money tied up into the DL with 2 1st rounders and the premier NT. All we need is a 2 down player, armstead will move inside next to DeFo in nickel. You wanna pay 10+ mil to a 2 down player?

As for the notion that we woulda been fine, paraag is a cap/contract genius and he will figure it out...that's a little counter intuitive. He's a genius precisely BECAUSE of moves like signing Mitchell over poe or williams.

This move solidifies the line while leaving money for a #1 cb if they want. Guarantee we will draft a 1T between 3 and 5 as well

Not mad about the signing. I would rather overpay for a potentially solid signing at a position of need than hold on to 50+ million in cap space and be terrible. I think it also sends a good message to other FAs that the 49ers are not only an attractive place for FA's to come, but that we are willing to put up the benjamins.

Bingo...our first two signings....good, bad or indifferent....and already the FA market knows that the 49ers are out there, are willing to go top dollar, and suddenly, it isn't 2016 FA anymore, when FAs wouldn't give us the time of day. New sheriffs in town, both Kyle and Lynch. And they got money to burn. Anyone who doesn't like one or both of these signings, really think our GM and HC just struck the first blows in FA? We are on the board now, every single FA out there knows our situation and also knows the FO is not just fixed, it is humming. And we are willing to go top dollar.

How many FAs don''t know about us this morning? Answer? They all do. Stroke of genius, both signings, and i think both will work out as good players.

Mitchell, heck, how many NTs did we have on the roster prior to his signings? I mean real NTs? Answer: none. Now we have one. So if Saleh wants to play 3-4 D for a couple plays, now we have an NT. But the truth is, he is a better DT than NT, and that is what our primary D will be...4-3. This is a win/win no matter how you slice it and getting our name out there BEFORE FA starts? BRILLIANT!.

And no i don't mean like last yr when our name was out there...as a place to avoid at all costs. This yr, all FAs already know we got $100 mil and want to spend it. Brilliant. Brilliant.

I posted in another thread that "Lynch was going to make us famous". I didn't have this tactic in mind , rather his interpersonal relationships, plus because of media work, he knows everybody, is well thot of, and now they know he is the real deal. He is also a serious guy, has money in both hands, and is one smart cookie. The difference from baalke is mind boggling.

Lynch and Kyle want us to be competitive...it is just going to be a lot sooner than most of us thot.

I'm surprised they didn't release anyone yet.

Williams signed an injury settlement I believe.

Oh I thought he was on IR.

Everyone wants Allen, but no one talking about Carlos Watkins who had 10.5 sacks this past year. I would trade Dial for a 7th round pick to make room for Watkins.

It is if you have $100 million and it's FA

Would love Watkins...was a big fan of him this yr. there are some great DT in this draft. I like Mitchell as a vet and drafting someone in the mid rds

Here's to hoping we bring Ian Williams back as a reserve/rotational player, assuming he can pass a physical.

If not, I think bringing Dorsey back (as long as his playing isn't also greatly diminished by injury) as a backup wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'd rather draft someone both are injury prone

I agree with drafting someone but Dorsey shouldn't cost much and draft picks are always a gamble so I'd do both. And, yep, Dorsey is injury prone but if he comes fairly cheap I think he would make for good depth.
This might not be a premier signing but i can tell you this much, this signing puts chumps on noticed N makes it easier to cut players like Brock N Jerod Eddie

K' Waun Williams takes Brocks roster spot

Earl Mitchell takes Eddie's roster spot

So far both Lynch N Shanahan are showing they wont settle for the same mediocrity that has been holding back this team the past few years, this is a nice start to the new regime.
He looks like a rotational player for passing downs. Gets penetration up the middle, in an attacking defense he will help wreck the pocket.

Exactly what we need. I love Glen Dorsey but he doesn't get much penetration and has been a let down after being drafted so high by the Chiefs. What Lynch and Shanahan are doing is refreshing.

He's a good signing. He will give us much needed depth on the line. Not just a body but a body with starting experience. He comes cheap in the grand scheme of things and he's making 1/3 of his deal this year. Plus doesn't hurt us in the comp pick department either.

Who else is kicking a** at nose tackle? Oh yeah that's right, no one.

Kinda how it works bro when your coming off a two win season. Let's just rejoice in that free agents are starting to consider us again with playoff contenders in the mix vying for their services.

This. Should be a pinned reply if Skybox Media ever implements that feature.
