I don't get the people criticising this signing.
He's a good rotational player to regular starter and people criticise us for spending on him. News Flash: when FA starts there's no guarantee we could sign Poe or Williams. You don't pass up on a roster improvement now because you might get in a bidding war later and lose out.
Not every signing is a big name. This is a team transitioning coaching staff and defensive scheme so they'll need new players to fill new roles. So what. At 16 over 4-5 years he's not hurting the team or the cap. The 5.7 figure is to front load the deal because we have 100 million in space, nothing more.
Yup, agreed. Easy to front load this deal a bit to protect the cap two/three years later. The 49ers having the most cap space out of EM's suitors (DEN/ATL/SEA) allowed them to easily do the front loading.
Agree with those saying that waiting to try and get into a bidding war for Poe/Williams is a dangerous risk. There's some young talent on the DL that needs to develop. Nail down the 1t now and get into a bidding war for other positions (WR, OL). EM isn't on Poe's level, but he should be sufficient in that role as we wait for DeFo/AA to mature. Those are the guys (Blair) the 49ers need to depend on to be their DL studs. EM will be the "steady vet".
Been watching some tape on this guy and I'd guesstimate that 80% of the time he is playing 1tech. Suh obviously dominates the snaps at 3t for MIA. Pretty sure EM's going to be playing 1tech the majority of downs for the 49ers. When he's doubled, he's done. When he's singled, he plays with good leverage and easily holds his own. Put a nice bull jerk move on Beadles in their game last season.
