I think it's just a depth signing. I really want Dontari Poe. He'd be a nice fit to go alongside Dorsey or Dial.

You don't pay a guy $4M per to be a backup.

This move more likely means Dorsey probably isn't coming back, at least that's my guess.

I don't get the people criticising this signing.

He's a good rotational player to regular starter and people criticise us for spending on him. News Flash: when FA starts there's no guarantee we could sign Poe or Williams. You don't pass up on a roster improvement now because you might get in a bidding war later and lose out.

Not every signing is a big name. This is a team transitioning coaching staff and defensive scheme so they'll need new players to fill new roles. So what. At 16 over 4-5 years he's not hurting the team or the cap. The 5.7 figure is to front load the deal because we have 100 million in space, nothing more.
Yup, agreed. Easy to front load this deal a bit to protect the cap two/three years later. The 49ers having the most cap space out of EM's suitors (DEN/ATL/SEA) allowed them to easily do the front loading.

Agree with those saying that waiting to try and get into a bidding war for Poe/Williams is a dangerous risk. There's some young talent on the DL that needs to develop. Nail down the 1t now and get into a bidding war for other positions (WR, OL). EM isn't on Poe's level, but he should be sufficient in that role as we wait for DeFo/AA to mature. Those are the guys (Blair) the 49ers need to depend on to be their DL studs. EM will be the "steady vet".

Been watching some tape on this guy and I'd guesstimate that 80% of the time he is playing 1tech. Suh obviously dominates the snaps at 3t for MIA. Pretty sure EM's going to be playing 1tech the majority of downs for the 49ers. When he's doubled, he's done. When he's singled, he plays with good leverage and easily holds his own. Put a nice bull jerk move on Beadles in their game last season.

Puts a damper on my Johnathan Hankins aspirations that I've had for months. Hankins played the 3tech this season for the Giants but his natural position is the one and he's much more effective there.

Love it. This is a good sign.

I'm going to sound old here- but I wouldn't mind us drafting Allen and seeing the middle blown the hell up like Young and Stubblefield used to do lol

That sure brings back memories. BY was my favorite player on the Team for many years.

Stubblefield was the f**king man.

Also, there isn't a lot of talent at positions like WR in FA

Okay no offense... but now I think you might be trolling at this point.

Alshon Jeffrey, DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garçon, Vincent Jackson, Michael Floyd, Victor Cruz, Anquan Boldin... and that's just off the top of my head.

Trolling? Vincent Jackson? Boldin? Cruz? Have you seen a calendar, lately? This is not 2012.

Desean Jackson is a literal gang banger, so he'd be a great influence on a young, bay-area team. Not to mention Michael Floyd who is 27, going on 14.

Alshon is a FA bust waiting to happen due to a nagging knee injury...

Honestly, the best option on the table isn't even on your list: Pryor. Floyd could work, but he's a known pain-in-the-ass. There were rumours that Brandin Cooks is on the block; that'd be a great option.

I'm just focusing in on the NT position, but I'm not going to pay a ton of money to someone who's job is to take on blockers. Mitchell can do just as good a job as a Poe would do at a fraction of what we'd be paying him.

Wow. I don't even know what to say to that.

Nothing needs to be said.
What this shows more than anything, is that FAs are now willing to come here. We arent a good team yet, so this is a good sign.

Pryor would be a great pickup as well. I highly doubt the Saints let Cooks go but he would be good for sure.

Only the tape would put some truth behind that. So I heard this guy is a 1T, and to make it easier on others, a 1T is essentially the strong side DT who lines up over the center and is pretty much our nose tackle. I feel with AA hopefully playing LE,Buck playing the 3T which is the weakside DT position next to the Leo who right now would be Brooks/Lynch... That leaves Blair,Dial, loser of Brooks/Lynch along with Harold all as backups. Since Lynch/Brooks both will be FAs after this year so that has to be the number one priority with SAM right behind it.

For me, the next move should be re-signing Chris Jones...he and Mitchell would give us two stout interior DL. Then, draft Jonathan Allen...who along with Blair would give us a much stouter DL than we've had since Justin Smith retired. It would also allow Shanahan/Lynch to jettison Dorsey, Dial & Jerrod-Edie. I think both Lynch and Brooks could be effective in the Leo position.

When I look at the niners DL I see a lot of guys who are lean and more suited for the 4/3. So this switch will likely be a smoother transition than many think. The only power player who might not be as good is Armstead, but I believe he will be fine. Being more aggressive might suit him well.

Yea that dude is a bust

He's been hurt, too early to tell if he's a bust.

AA will likely be fine but he will need to get low and stay low, which isn't easy for a 6'7" guy to do. But when he's firing out it's easier and he's so darn strong I really expect our DL to be special this year. I could see them picking up another guy in the draft as it's one of the strongest positions this year. More than ten guys potentially 3rd round or higher.
We are definitely gonna use our salary cap. With how busy we've been it seems a sure thing that we are gonna be going after big names.

I won't be a bit surprised to see the 49ers pull the trigger on Solomon Thomas in April. I think he could be one heck of a pass rusher on passing downs from the inside. Plays DE on running downs and DT on passing downs. But also say this. With the type of defense the 49ers are trying to play we're missing an elite free safety that can roam all over the field. Malik Hooker or Jamal Adams would fit nicely into our defense with Eric Reid moving to strong safety. I prefer Malik Hooker but both Adams is also very good.

According to @ninersnation

Vance Joseph (DEN head coach) just came over from MIA so he has had very recent interaction with Mitchell. That's a good sign of Mitchell's recent ability.
Let's say, that's a good sign that Mitchell seems to be a good fit in Joseph's system.
