I think it's just a depth signing. I really want Dontari Poe. He'd be a nice fit to go alongside Dorsey or Dial.
If Mitchell is in addition to a Poe or Hankins, I'll take back what I said about the signing.

Earl Mitchell is yet another example that free agents will always follow the money.
Players don't care about winning. They care about getting paid. Winning is just nice to have.

I'm going to sound old here- but I wouldn't mind us drafting Allen and seeing the middle blown the hell up like Young and Stubblefield used to do lol
That sure brings back memories. BY was my favorite player on the Team for many years.
Stubblefield was the f**king man.
He wasn't all that without BY lined up beside him!

Earl Mitchell cites Jeff Zgonina, DeMeco Ryans as big factors in 49ers signing
The 49ers won out over Seattle and Denver in the competition for free agent defensive tackle Earl Mitchell. He talked about why he made the decision.
The San Francisco 49ers formally signed defensive tackle Earl Mitchell on Saturday, and he chatted with Bay Area media after it was official. The 49ers are coming off a 2-14 season, and Mitchell had contract offers from the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, so naturally he got questions about what drew him to San Francisco.
Mitchell talked about the family environment the 49ers are building. He also talked about the respect he felt as he met with the team. However, he also cited the familiar faces in the organization.
Mitchell played for the Miami Dolphins the past three seasons, but prior to that he played for the Houston Texans from 2010 to 2013. He just missed being there with Kyle Shanahan, but he cited two 49ers assistants he knew from his time in Houston. During his first two years, Mitchell played with 49ers defensive quality control coach DeMeco Ryans, who was in Houston from 2006 to 2011. 49ers defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina played in Houston from 2007 to 2009, but his first coaching job was 2013. He served as the Texans' assistant defensive line coach in 2013, which meant he worked with Mitchell in the latter's final season in Houston.
The 49ers did not hire a lot of big name assistant coaches, but adding recent former players can be a draw for free agents. Mitchell talked about playing with Ryans and working with Zgonina, but he also cited their respective overall playing careers as things he is looking to emulate. I imagine the money played some part in it, but without knowing what Seattle or Denver offered, it is still good to see the 49ers win the recruiting battle.

So important to rebuild the leadership on this team. I expect more signings of vets with great character to help create what used to be common in niner land!

Are people forgetting there are only 53 roster spots? Haha talking about resigning all our DL + acquire in FA + draft some more as high as #2 overall

The team doesn't start with 53 roster spots, they whittle down to 53. The more talent in TC the better the final 53 will be. An injury or someone coming to camp grossly out of shape isn't so devastating when there is honest quality competition at every spot.

I see us being very active once FA starts, adding reasonably priced vets that fit into our system. Doing this would also allow us to be able to trade off similar type players currently on the roster for anything we can get. Lynch/Shanahan want to change the culture here, and one way to do that, is to remove a lot of the old regimes players that are replaceable but also might have a little value in trade to help bring back draft assets to this team.
I personally would let all the GM's in the league know that there is a fire sale going on, and if we have something they want, to give us their best offer, or that player will probably be going to another team, and they will have missed out on them. This strategy would allow us to move a bunch of our border line keep or cut guys for what ever we can get prior to the draft, and also make it easier to see where we need to focus on in the draft.
I'm not saying guys like Reaser+Martin+Tank+Harold+others of this ilk will net us a ton, but if we're able to either do player swaps with them, or get way future draft picks, like 5th or 6th rounders in 2019 or 6th or 7th rounders in 2018, that would be better than potentially losing them for nothing when we potentially cut them. I see Lynch/Shanahan removing most of our current roster in the next two years, and replacing it with their FA's and draft picks, so that when we start winning again, it is because of all their roster additions, and not because of what they all ready had.

Leader Produce, so he better... or else, no one is gonna follow...
personally, I don't like the signing...
1st of all, he's not much of a player, we have that already with Armstead...
2ndly, this move basically tells me we aren't drafting Jonathan Allen if Myles goes to Cleveland...
Rueben Foster would be too high w/the 2nd, and so will be with every QBs in the draft.
Do we go with L4 or Cory then?

Perhaps you were too young to remember that Stubby won DROY before BY joined him..

It's still February and the combine hasn't even started yet. I wouldn't read too much into anything they do yet as it pertains to the draft. I highly doubt they know exactly who they want at the two spot at this juncture. They may have a few guys that are entertaining at the moment. Let's see what they do in full fledge free agency first, after the combine before jumping to conclusions.
