I think it's just a depth signing. I really want Dontari Poe. He'd be a nice fit to go alongside Dorsey or Dial.
If Mitchell is in addition to a Poe or Hankins, I'll take back what I said about the signing.
Don't think that's the case. Even so, why are you complaining? We don't need to spend a ton of money on a position that does the dirty work. We are better off spending the money on more premium positions where we still have needs.
You're probably right but Mitchell is still no dominant 2 gap immovable object. I want our Ted Washington in this 4-3 so that Buckner, AA and whoever our LEO is, can be turned loose and attack like John Lynch wants.
But, Ted Washington was crap in a 4-3, wasn't he? I'm trying to remember... he didn't shine until after he left the 49ers.

I wouldn't say crap...he was an immovable object with us the first three years but got better and better after he left us...which is why I want a developed Brandon Williams, Dontari Poe or even Hankins vs. a rookie NT. Worth every penny even at 67% of the time on the field.

Completely agree. My hunch though, is that we're not in the running anymore for a top $$$ Fat Guy
. In which case, we need to look to the draft for one.

I find it funny that people complain that we are paying Mitchell 1 million more than what the Broncos offered in year 1 of his deal. Who knows how many years the Bronco deal was going to be? The good thing for us, is that after this season, we technically have him under control for 3 years and 10.5 million total. Seems kind of cheap for a guy who very well could be starting for most if not all of those 4 years, assuming he stays healthy.
We have the money right now, to continue front loading deals to make the total package more valuable. For example, we signed Mitchell to a 4/16 deal. We don't know the whole structure, but we do know the 1st year is 5.5 million, so lets just assume the final 3 years are 3.5 million a year to simplify it. So having his 4 year deal breakdown, lets go like this:
49ers deal: 5.5 million year 1, 3.5 million year 2, 3.5 million year 3, 3.5 million year 4. = 16 million total
Other team: 3.7 million year 1, 3.9 million year 2, 4.1 million year 3, 4.3 million year 4 = 16 million total
Now even though both deals are for 16 million total, the 49ers deal is technically worth MORE, because the more money you get early, is more valuable than the same amount later, due to inflation. The other thing the players look at, is that you want to guarantee as much money early as you can, because there is no guarantee you will be there all 4 years. The 49ers made his deal so team friendly after year 1, that Mitchell is still relatively cheap, if he becomes just a rotational player.
Truth! I can see every one of our contacts this year being font loaded...win win for the player/agent/49ers.
I think people need to calm down and let Lynch and Shanny operate their vision. As I've said before. I'm not gonna complain about any signing before I've seen the product on the field, and even then imma hold my complaints. These two have 6 years to turn this around. I think a little patients is in order.
IMHO.

You don't pay someone 5.5 million to ride the pine. Just think about it for a second.
of course you never start out paying someone that much to ride the pine.. often times they end up riding the pine and getting cut cuz they are not as good as were previously advertised.. i guess some people are just thrilled that we are spending money... when the team starts to invest in some players in a few weeks that could actually have a impact and not just people we hope will play and provide depth. thats is when i will believe they are serious about things.
If the last few weeks haven't shown you they are serious about winning nothing will. You need them to blow 100 mill on Ingram and Jeffrey and then you will believe they are serious? Ok, got it. Lol.

This
Washington definitely got better after he left us
I like Hankins as the best value - Age, performance and $$$

Poe was actually better when he was younger and is gonna be overpaid based on play from back in 2013 not this past yr...he's also got back issues. Williams is a stud and will be tagged (reports are Baltimore is making him a priority vs Wagner) Hankins would be perfect for us and I think NY is close to signing JPP.
End of the day this draft is stocked with big fatties, Mitchell is our vet guy so I'm all for drafting a guy cheap. Watkins from Clemson or Dalvin Tomlinson from bama would be money in the bank.

This signing tells me several things:
1. Lynch thinks the DL is the unit to build the defense around.
2. This is a long term rebuild. Mitchell is not the most talented DL FA, but he is, by all accounts, a consummate professional. He will help AA and Buckner reach the next level.
3. I have a feeling that Lynch is going to use FA to stock up a few specific units and then use the draft to bring in multiple players for just a few specific units. For instance, I think we will see Lynch grab more Free agent DLs, FB, OL, a veteran QB or two, and STs. Then, I think he will focus the draft on LBs, WRs, QBs, and RBs. Just my guess.
4. AA, Buckner, Mitchell, and Dial are the 4 guys who will definitely be part of the DL rotation. Tank and Blair both seem to fit the 4-3 better than the 3-4, so I am excited to see what they can do. The LEO position is the biggest question on the team, besides QB of course. Lynch will have a shot or Blair could surprise in this role but no one else on the roster really fits.

That's the right approach indeed.
FYI, I was just stating in relation to the salary cap position we're currently in, we're in great shape to attrack free agents because we are one of the few teams who can offer more upfront money via bigger signing bonuses and first year cap hits...it's a win-win for players, agents and us down the road.

Run defense needs the most help, want to see how that gets fixed. First 2 signings help on passing downs.

Great post. I agree.
I disagree about dial and tank. I wont be surprised to see both not makng the final 53.
