Its actually more the opposite, he provides good pass rush pressure up the middle but has been so so against the run.

Matt Barrows @mattbarrows

DT Earl Mitchell's deal with SF: 4 yrs,$16M overall with $5.5 in first year. They've already signed as many FAs as last year.

Expect to see lots of these kinds of contacts...front-loaded and cheap in year 2, 3, 4, etc.

I hear that too but 5.5 sacks someone said, and all his highlights that I can find are mostly run stops

that's both hilarious and depressing. Free agency hasn't even started and we've already done as much as last year

Got the 1tech

What are your thoughts on him? Not too familiar other than his position and little things I've seen

No thoughts. I never even heard of him until last week. I might not even be correct that he'll play 1t.

Lmao. Most of us don't know either. I just know he's a run stopper. I hope he can stay healthy as he missed a lot of games the past two seasons. Mitchell had a chance to play for less $$$ with Denver and Seattle. The $$$ makes a huge difference but I think this is the Lynch effect. He's a natural leader and inspires people, evident through his press conference and interviews. We know one thing about Lynch's signings; he picks up players that love football. Lynch will be able to land more talent than that "other" GM with the raspy voice.

You're right about him as a run stopper. I think we have our NT. That's not a small contract, but with the cap space and knowing how Parrag does things, this is by no means an albatross contract. Mitchell has enough experience in the league as a proven commodity. Not expecting flashy splash plays. Just don't get moved at the point of attack and he's worth the money. Seems like a younger Glenn Dorsey.

Walter is pretty much the equivalent of a lesser-informed member of a random NFL football forum. He just posts a lot of abject nonsense.

5.5 sacks in 5 season? seems mediocre to me.

Well, the 49ers, Broncos, Seahawks & Falcons were going after him so maybe he's a player with some upside.

The Dolphins released him but the fact that the Broncos and Vance Joseph tried to lock him down says a lot.

The Dolphins couldn't afford him anymore and they have Jordan Phillips to fill that spot.
Just saw this: He and new 49ers DC Robert Saleh were in Houston together during Mitchell's 2010 rookie season.
He's 300 lbs and not great against the run.

As depth, possibly playing a lot as DT in nickel, or in base as a rotational Strong side end, or weak side tackle, seems like a good signing. Especially considering the other teams that were interested (Seattle, Atlanta, who run the same D we will, and Denver, who knows D)

If he's supposed to be our 1 tech We still need 1 or two Fat Guys.

2/2 in signings so far!

We went from, nobody wants to sign with us to...

...we signing errrr'body!
Just a point of information. If FA starts officially in 2nd week of March, how is it that we are signing FAs right now? i'm missing something, obviously. What?

Interesting. Everything I've read says he's a better run stopper. I guess we'll see. Perhaps a solid, balanced player. Hasn't played too many snaps so he should have fresh legs.

That's 2 for 2 in FA signings this week...just like D'Waun Williams, Mitchell could've gone elsewhere, but chose the Niners. I'm liking this trend. From what I've heard about Mitchell, he's strong vs the run and not as much against the pass. If nothing else, he's some good depth along a DL that'll need beefing up. I don't think his signing means they're not going to sign others...just getting started.

YES! Shows we do want to be competitive right away in Kyle and John's regime and I think it's a great sign that we will be aggressive in FA.

The D Williams move i thought was just okay, but this move I really like. This guy is a good football player and fills a big need and posistion for us right away
