He's going to be a 4-3 dt

We need 2 different 4-3 DTs.
  1. The weak side DT is a penetrating guy who can rush the passer.
  2. The strong side guy is a Fat NT type.

I'm thinking he's being signed to play the weakside, backing up either armstead or buckner. And will see time in our nickel. I don't like the idea of a 300 lb fat NT type guy.

He was a starter for one year in Houston in which they struggled mightily against the run. He is more quick than powerful, adept at bringing pressure up the middle but not a guy who will anchor and hold up the middle well.

"in landing Mitchell, who goes 6-3, 310 pounds and will play the run-stuffing defensive tackle role in the team's 4-3 defense."

"He is expected to help a run defense that not only finished 32nd in the NFL last year but sent a franchise record in allowing 2,654 yards on the ground to go along with a league-worst 25 rushing touchdowns allowed."

I like the Jay Ratliff comparison. A penetrating NT. They can still draft or sign a fatty to stop the run

As long as they add a true NT, this could wind up being a pretty good move if Mitchell can stay healthy. Nice DL depth overall.

This.

LEO can be filled by Harold or Tank IF we are lucky. At least they played this position in college.

You don't like the idea? So? Some ppl here strongly assume that he was signed to play 1tech.

I agree Phoenix. It's kind of like how the Seahawks have a more fast and athletic attacking DL in the same scheme we'll be running. Hence probably why Seattle was pursuing him too.

He is exactly a Seattle type of DT, like a Tony McDaniels or some of the other guys they have had in recent years. Not a shock at all that Seattle and Atlanta both pursued him.
Life is good again!

Ugh. Hopefully we're still looking at Poe/Williams/etc. in FA. And also looking at maybe Brantley/Qualls/Vanderdoes in the draft.

Ugh?

Plan b, in case Poe or any other dl doesn't sign with us

Great pickup. Since moving to the 4/3 will need more interior lineman.

He's not a NT he's more a pass rushing DT will still need a big immovable object in the middle.
If this is indeed the case, then where do we see Buckner and AA?

Leo is a DE, and if Eli or Tank can thrive there, then yeah, that'd be great.

As for DT, getting more talent there is definitely a need. I like the signing. I just don't love the idea of him being relied on to be a Fat NT Type who is controlling the center of the line as a run stuffer.

That's what I was trying to say. People were already saying he was going to play the 1tech, but that's certainly not the case.

He seems more like a quick athletic get to the qb type dt similar to the ones up in Seattle.

At this point anyone would be an improvement over what they had last year, just don't see Mitchell as the dominant run stuffing type. He's a high motor guy though that might rub off on Armstead and some of the younger DL.
Good value. Niners on the way back to being to the playoffs
