It is just as boggling a sentence, since clearly Shanny knows how to use a FB, but at least with how you have a complete thought.... versus why and being left to think he had a stroke mid thought and just typed out a random word.

He does use him often. Its up to the QB to distribute players the ball.

If Shanny knows how to use the best FB in the NFL, how is it that he's not had a season under Kyle where he had over 65 catches for the season ?

Kyle's teams historically aren't throwing the ball much. I kept wanting him to put up Tom Rathman like numbers, but I just don't see that happening- not with us being in the 20s when it comes to how little we pass the ball.

Shanahan has been an OC in the NFL for 15 years. I am going to compare 15 years of his passing attempts (rankings) to Bill Walsh's and George Seifert's (18 years).

Kyle Shanahan
Year. Passing Rank
2022 26th
2021 29th
2020 16th
2019 29th
2018 20th
2017 2nd
2016 26th
2015 8th
2014 26th
2013 9th
2012 30th
2011 5th
2010 4th
2009 4th
2008 7th

It seems more or less, the more successful the team is, the LESS he passes, by a huge margin. So yeah, Juice ain't ever going to catch 60 passes. We'll be lucky to get 25 IMO.

Seifert

Year. Passing Rank

1996 11th
1995 2nd
1994 18th
1993 13th
1992 14th
1991 3rd
1990 2nd
1989 20th

Walsh

Year. Passing Rank
1988 15th
1987 10th
1986 4th
1985 8th
1984 15th
1983 9th
1982 1st
1981. 9th
1980. 1st
1979. 1st

Coincidentally, three of the six lowest passing attempt rankings were when Mike Shanahan was calling the plays.

This kind of awesome breakdown deserves it's own thread

GREAT JOB REALLY... W/ALL HONESTY..

it basically means that he is NOT being used to his max..

Can you break down the year Rathman had over 70 catches along side JR - JT - BJ - RC.. and how that is possible ??

1989

Rice - 82 catches, 1483 yards, 17 TD's (absurd lol)
Rathman - 73 catches, 616 yards, 1 TD
Taylor - 60 catches, 1077 yards, 10 TD's
Craig - 49 catches, 473 yards, 1 TD
Brent Jones - 40 catches, 500 yards, 4 TD's

Next highest was Harry Sydney with 9 catches. Similar story this season, 4 players dominating the receptions:

Aiyuk - 35/620
McCaffrey - 32/292
Kittle - 32/443
Samuel - 20/302
Jennings - 12/181
McCloud - 8/90
Juszczyk - 6/39

Juice is either not getting open or not a primary option on many plays. Rathman's season with 73 was by far his highest, but it wasn't like it came out of nowhere. He had seasons with 30, 42, 48, 34, 44 as well.

Given that he was a college TE, I think the ability is there to dominate teams and have a ball control offense with Juice and CMC as the primary options followed by Kittle. I just don't get why this hasn't been used.

I also think passing to set up the run can be a thing here.

Good call. And like Kittle, IMO, Juice would have a lot more receptions if he didn't have to stay in and block so much.

u mean, IF he was being used correctly...
Good things happen when this guy is involved. Just a very good football player.

Gets an occasional opportunity to catch a pass and is very reliable - on tough & easy catches.
Shanahan jokingly blames Juice for scoring in Jags game in this week's chat with Papa.

I personally believe that had Shanny been using Juice to the max as the best and most all around FB in football, 44 woulda kneeled down on the broken play where he caught the ball and scored.. He from that Ivy League, he would be smart enough to do that so CMC can break the record..

Agree!

I also think Juice would be a very effective receiving weapon if used more in that regard.
Kittle said they gave Juice grief at the team meeting, too.

Juice told Shanahan he didn't know he wasn't in the EndZone when he caught the ball.

huh? he WAS NOT in the endzone.. he got hit and landed inside..

but then again.. that I DID NOT KNOW seems to be our motto this year..

KYLE said he did not know that 25 was not getting in the roration
KYLE said he did not know that 4's a choker
KYLE said he did not know how to get CMC in the end zone with all his so called beautiful play design..

Congratulations on just another All Pro Year!

This is actually his first ever AP all-pro selection, because they only just reinstated the fullback position this year. 8 career pro bowls and now a first team all-pro.

Sorry, I meant another for this team. 4 first team offense, 1 first team defense.
Interesting he is an all pro this year and PFF has him ranked as one of the worst on the offensive side of the ball. And his lowest score since his rookie year.
