Whatever we paid him, it was worth it. He could have been used way more on pass routes, but there are just so many O plays and only 1 football. He got way underused this yr due to the multiple other targets.

Now, wait until this yr...with Hurd and Deebo, and Jet showing up, plus Pettis healed (hopefully) . Guys are going to wonder why we use Au jus so little. Answer is the same...1 football, 10 targets.

The beauty of Au Jus is tho, that he can line up as WR, RB, TE...and play all 3 slots. So even if he doestn' get the ball, he is still a threat and has to be covered. In the end...he will earn his money, JUst not wth a lot of receptions. And the guy can flat out BLOCK.

But the only guy who got the ball last year was the TE.

Actually, not really. He was certainly the only one who could be depended upon to catch the ball when thrown. Not so much the others. Yes kittle did get more chances than anyone, but that was a factor of ::

1. getting himself open

2. Catching everything thrown even close to the right time zone.

And 3. The corollary is that if you throw to kittle and he is dependable, then a) the coach wants to dial him up more often and b).he catches a greater percent of balls thrown his way. QBs favored him also for both aforemententioned points.

If an offense is predicated around 21 personnel, the fullback better be a hyper-versatile player who can lead block AND beat a LB in man coverage and catch the ball.

Fortunately, Juice is that guy. I just hope he doesn't sustain any more big concussions.

Another good point.

The highest paid FB went to the team that used the most 21 personnel.

No other team would make sense paying that much, and SF had the cap space to make it a free player essentially.
Juice needs to be used, and successfully, in short yardage.

That's not really his strength. That and his increasing number of concussions doesn't lend itself for that.

True. True.

But without many threats, why was Juice a non-factor?
^^^ a good part of that time he was doing what the OL didn't do, esp the interior OL. He was picking up the blocks they missed. As a secondary reason, he was used frequently as a decoy to get the primary receiver free and clear. That was kyle...scheming.
Dude needs 5-6 plays a game where he's the focus instead of the distraction.
His girl look good tho.

So who's our short yardage power back? Coleman?
