When they went back to the championship colors in 2009, they settled on a red more in tune with the pre 1994 uniforms.

you might be correct. compared videos of late 80's and early 90's games to ones from '94-'95 (non throwback games) and the shade of red in the latter does seem brighter:

this is by no means a scientific comparison though. many things may factor into the perceived shade of red:

-lighting conditions (time of day, time of year, stadium lights, clouds/rain)

-TV camera resolution (different networks as well as improving technology)

-sweat and game wear

lastly, according to the gridiron uniform database, Wilson Athletic made the 49ers jerseys only from 1990-93, then transitioned to making their full uniform (pants and also the throwback set) in 1994 so they probably tweaked the shade of red prior to the '94 season

I've got a 1995 Steve Young on-field jersey from Wilson Staff (WS). I don't know if wilson staff is a different branch of Wilson or no. Anyway, I think you might be right they may have brightened up the color a bit. Maybe even a different type of fabric.

if I recall, they also changed the cut of the jerseys...1990-93 had solid weave for the collar/shoulder/sleeve while the torso was mesh (pics from these seasons will have glossier appearance esp on the shoulder pads)

1994-95 jerseys were more of a double mesh for the shoulder area
