Dr. Chao was on KNBR yesterday and confirmed a patellar bone bruise is often a 4 week injury. Though, it obviously changes for better or worse from case to case.

It will be 3.5 weeks by the time the Packers game rolls around (due to the Thursday night game in which he was injured)

I'm guessing he's 50/50 for this week and has a very good shot vs. Ravens.

Yeah, I'm hoping for this week, but it sounds like definitely next week.
Dear George,

Come back. Kick ass. Take names and Ws.

Thanks.
I say rest him as long as we're still in contention. A 100% healed Kittle is more crucial than playoff seeding, imo.

Better to let him heal up and return so the team can get hot at the right time for SB run.

Of course, all of this is predicated on the bone bruise actually being the injury, which is purely speculation, right?
If he doesn't play this week it's going to be tough. The run game doesn't work well without him and that's the biggest issue.

KS is going to have to scheme up a run game.

If it's a bone bruise, this article details what that really means, calling it essentially a "microscopic fracture" when it's that deep, and is typically a one-month recovery at minimum for most players. With Kittle, it's certainly possible he could push it a week early, but the team has repeatedly said they need him to be good long term. So, I would not be surprised if they wait for that 4-week mark and do not play him until Baltimore. Based on the article below, I do not want Kittle on the field until fully healed, due to the potential for long-term complications (see article link below).

https://nationalfootballpost.com/monday-morning-md-bone-bruise-is-not-just-a-pain-thing/

"A bone bruise cannot be trivialized. One cannot just take pain medicine and ignore the symptoms. Despite Roethlisberger's ironman reputation, he can't just play through it. Edema or swelling in the bone can lead to complications and articular cartilage loss if not careful.

What is a bone bruise? It is not a simple contusion that is treated with ice and managed symptomatically. A deep bone bruise is essentially a microscopic fracture, much like a ligament sprain is a microscopic tear. I am not suggesting it is a true fracture that needs surgery or casting, but there is compromise to the integrity of the bone in order to get the swelling/fluid inside the bone."

Yes, but they wouldn't even let him hit the practice field in a limited fashion if he was still in that risk window. The primary issue is swelling around the joint which is not easily treated with an injection. They will slowly ramp up his movement to see how his knee responds the following morning. I would imagine they'll give him a pretty extensive workout on Friday or Saturday and see what the next morning looks like before making a final decision on Sunday.

It's true that not all bone bruises are created equal. But they can see pretty clearly how he is healing on imaging.

Exactly. That's why he hasn't stepped foot on the practice field since then, so we know it's not minor. It obviously looked anything but minor on the replay too. Ultimately, we need to make whatever the best decision is for the team going forward.
In the future we need to seriously find a good #2 TE. I hated the Kaden Smith pick because I knew someone who could block better would make the team over him which they did.

I like Dwelley but having a Delanie Walker type blocking H back would do wonders for this team.

Dwelly is a pretty good #2.

I'm fine with Kittle and Dwelly. Just need to make sure they are healthy and maybe have a serviceable #3 that could come in if one of those 2 go down.

As a receiver he's fine. But he's horrific as a blocker on the line of scrimmage and we're seeing that affect our run game.

That's not on Dwelley. I have been watching this oline get pushed back 2-3 yards since the first AZ game where Kittle played. The entire line is getting dominated.

I don't know if he's horrific - maybe an average blocker at best.

KS had him playing FB in place of Juice so he can't be all that bad as a blocker. Maybe he's better behind the line than on the line. I don't follow Dwelley around when I watch the game. He did look really good catching the ball though.

Please bring Kittle back to us
