Friday will be the biggest clue. I don't think he does anything today.

A side field is not the practice field though, to me. The practice field to me is where you go through drills and walk-throughs with teammates. Rehab is very different. Kittle has not even participated in a limited capacity in practice since the injury.

The extent of the damage of course will always determine what level of participating they allow either way, in rehab, or active practice sessions. It's been noted, although a bit indirectly, that the nature of the injury was severe enough to keep him in the press box instead of standing on the field.

When I rewatch the play, I'm still not sure if we're dealing with a significant patellar contusion or maybe a tibial plateau contusion, since that exact diagnosis still hasn't been released. Either way, if it is a bone bruise like "NFL MD, Dr. Chao" predicted, there would certainly be an unsettling level of risk still to have him play this week. At this point, we're all in the same boat. We just. Don't. Know. I think most can understand my level of concern though and the PTSD that would be triggered when thinking about the fact that we let Richburg play on a torn quad last year.

I understand that is your personal preference. But the medical staff would not let him but weight on the leg, let alone any type of athletic movement, if he was still at risk for long term injury. We already have footage of him doing weight bearing rehab.

In regard to Richburg: I believe he was misdiagnosed, which resulted in his lingering injury issue last year. It will be very hard to misdiagnose a bone bruise and/or any lingering hyperextension damage.

I don't know what "personal preference" has to do with anything, lol. If he hasn't been listed as a participant on the official practice report, then he hasn't practiced. Hurd has reportedly worked on the side field too. But weight bearing rehab is still not practice... If that's what you're saying, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

I also think you missed my point. To take what I said further to provide absolute clarity: IF it's BOTH the type AND severity as Dr. Chao speculated, THEN there would be unsettling risk to play him less than four weeks out. However, as I said, the level of severity -- which only our team doctors know -- will dictate his level of participation leading up to the game (Kittle himself said it's ultimately not actually up to him at this point on whether or not he plays), and at this point, it seems like either it's not that type of injury or it's just not that level of severity.

Even if Kittle has no risk of articular cartilage loss, he still could absolutely have risk of reinjury. Or he may not. As we both know, rehab doesn't necessarily mean a player has no risk of re-injury. Obviously, part of the rehab process is to get the issue recovered to limit or eliminate that risk as much as possible.

The staff, which we all know is new this year, can only be judged on what sample size we have so far. I'm not trying to imply the medical staff is at risk of misdiagnosing again or putting our players at unnecessary risk, but at this point, we've seen multiple players suffer lingering setbacks (Witherspoon, Trent Taylor, and Jalen Hurd) with a couple others not looking anywhere near in game shape when they returned (Staley, McGlinchey). As a fan with lingering PTSD carrying over from the previous medical team, my trust in the new team has not been earned yet.

At this point, we're just expressing feelings, opinions, and speculative probabilities based on a combination of limited knowledge of the exact situation and other assumptions more than anything. So I'll leave it at this: Get well soon, Kittle!

I just keep refreshing the wz home page, because i know if there's news that he's playing, there'll be a "Breaking" banner and link to the story.

When did Matt Maiocco start having a anti-49ers agenda?

I suppose he's better than... say that guy whose first name rhymes with "can't."

Never. People just can't handle anything that isn't glowing. This team has been total trash up until this year... I think some are still working through the PTSD.
