What did playing tell you about these players? What did the coaches want to see and what did the coaches actually see?

Well, let's see

Quarterback – *Brian Hoyer 24, C.J. Beathard 20, Matt Barkley 4 --- clearly the goal was to try add get Hoyer into a rhythm and give BeatHard a real shot at securing the #2
Running back – *Carlos Hyde 20, Tim Hightower 14, Kapri Bibbs 10, *Kyle Juszczyk 6, Tyler McCloskey 5, Joe Williams 4 --- coaches have seen enough of Williams and Breida so they wanted to see the veterans in Hightower and Bibbs and see if they could get Carlos into a rhythm.
Wide receiver – Louis Murphy 23, *Marquise Goodwin 18, Kendrick Bourne 15, Jeremy Kerley 13, Aldrick Robinson 13, Victor Bolden 12, Trent Taylor 11, *Pierre Garçon 10, DeAndre Carter 5 --- they don't need to see Garcon so they gave Murphy a shot...a lot. Bolden and Bourne continue to get looked at hard.
Tight end – George Kittle 22, Garrett Celek 12, Logan Paulsen 10, *Vance McDonald 9, Blake Bell 5, Cole Hikutini 3 --- they wanted to see Kittle now that he's healthy and they know enough about Vance and Paulsen. No interest in Cole.
Offensive line – Erik Magnuson 25, *Trent Brown 24, *Zane Beadles 23, *Daniel Kilgore 23, *Brandon Fusco 23, *Joe Staley 23, JP Flynn 21, Tim Barnes 21, Garry Gilliam 21, John Theus 20, Darrell Williams 4, Norman Price 4, Andrew Lauderdale 4, Andrew Gardner 4 --- status quo here with Magnuson getting a long look now with the 2's and a promotion.

DEFENSE
Defensive line – D.J. Jones 38, Leger Douzable 36, Pita Taumoepenu 31, *Chris Jones 30, Quinton Dial 23, *Arik Armstead 23, *Earl Mitchell 19, Solomon Thomas 16, *Tank Carradine 15, Noble Nwachukwu 15, Elvis Dumervil 8 --- they wanted to see the rookies in Jones and Pita T, both competing for key backup spots. They are still looking at Jones and Dial hard too.
Linebacker – Dekoda Watson 33, Brock Coyle 30, Ray-Ray Armstrong 30, Ahmad Brooks 30, *Eli Harold 23, *Reuben Foster 23, *NaVorro Bowman 23, Shayne Skov 22, Alex Calitro 21 --- Watson ran with the 1's to see if he can add more than special teams, Harold too and Brooks with the 2's. Just needed bodies at ILB.
Cornerback – Asa Jackson 40, Ahkello Witherspoon 39, Keith Reaser 30, Will Davis 22, *Dontae Johnson 20, *Rashard Robinson 20, K'Waun Williams 11 --- they have their answer in Asa now. They wanted to get Witherspoon and Reaser as many snaps as possible too as key backups. Johnson and RR are both seen as starters.
Safety – *Lorenzo Jerome 37, Jaquiski Tartt 33, *Eric Reid 23, Don Jones 22, Vinnie Sunseri 19, Adrian Colbert 19 --- with Ward coming back, long look at Jerome and Tartt.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Clearly wanted to look at Mostert as as returner and especially Bolden Jr.

Eh the players should know where they can and can't line up. I don't think Shanny calls plays that puts players in an illegal formation. He could be harder on them when they make mistakes maybe.

COACHES: D. Last week, officials threw 20 flags on the 49ers. Saturday night, officials threw 14 flags on the 49ers. After Saturday's game, I asked Shanahan how he plans to cure the team's continuous lack of discipline. He stared at me. He didn't seem to like my question. "What do you mean by that?" he said. I reminded him about the 34 flags the past two weeks. "You just keep working at it," he shot back. Bad answer. Working at it hasn't worked. Shanahan needs to do something different. I suggest holding his players accountable for their mistakes during practice. If someone commits a pre-snap penalty, bench him for the rest of the drill. Give that player incentive not to make mistakes. That's what Jim Harbaugh did. Maybe Shanahan can give Harbaugh a call. Better yet, Shanahan can call his dad, Mike. He knows how to discipline a team. Pick up the phone, Kyle.

It really begs the question though.....who give a flying f**k what Grant Cohn thinks about football? f**k his grades, he's in no real position to evaluate these guys. He's shown time and again he hasn't the foggiest concearning Xs and Os.

Gotta love that Kyle already knows that Grant is a troll.

What's pretty stupid is all of Cohn's analysis (if you can call it that) of Kyle's HC job performance so far is based mostly in WWJHD. He reveres Jim Harbaugh as the gold standard of 49er coaching (excepting BW of course) probably because he started his "Inside the 49ers" blog about the same time JH was hired. So that's his reference point with any new Niner CS which is somewhat unfair.
Undoubtedly I give Harbaugh a ton of credit for a remarkable 3-year stretch reaching that many conf. championships in a row considering league parity and the 2011 lockout. But KS is rookie head coach with quite a different personality and coaching style than ole Jimmy, who also was a rookie NFL HC but had experience transforming basement college programs into dynamic winners. Cohn should critique Shanahan for his own merits, not some currently unrealistic comparison.
Going to be some tough cuts down to 53. These guys are playing their asses off, showing their talent, or flashes of it. Good stuff.

As a team they need to calm their tits, do the fundamentals right and curb the turnovers and penalties

Much better team this year than last year. Looking at about 4-5 wins, we got a brutal schedule.

He also dropped the pass which was intercepted. No. 3 receiver Jeremy Kerley caught no passes. No. 4 receiver Aldrick Robinson caught one pass for 39 yards. He should be the No. 3 receiver. He's better than Kerley.

Who here can tell me what's wrong with his bolded statement here?
There should be a comma after No. 3 receiver instead of a period?

That's a lot of words about snap counts. lol Didn't read it all.

When you have 4 TO in the first half snap counts don't mean much. Offensive guys should have double the snaps without the turnovers and defensive guys should have a lot less. Vance only had 9 because he took himself out of the game after a big shot he took. Came back in for another play then left again. Injuries and outcome of plays dictate snap counts.

Kyle said he wanted the young guys to watch the vet RBs. Has nothing to do with seeing enough of them.

I suggest you read the Q/A with Kyle. He talks about breaking down the film after the fact.

I
It was painful to watch....aside from a good game by Eric reid, some nice plays by Bowman, and a couple good throws by hoyer, this game was trash. Oh yeah and Joe Staley made a nice tackle.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together, NC. Only thing i see that really got my attn was Darrel Williams, 4 plays. That doesn't sound like someone making the 53...unless they already have him penciled in. Or as Smokes suggested, they want to "hide" him for stashing on PS. I guess it could be any of those, but really, it sounded like a nite for geting good looks at guys on the bubble. And Williams doesn't look like he'll be there. As long as magnuson makes it, I'll be happy. Williams is more a project....Magnus could actually help us this yr.

Reid was pretty solid until he was run over at the goal line.
Didn't catch the game live and was a bit scared to re-watch any of it.. but I did manage to get through the 1st half last night. I'll say this... aside from the penalties & sloppy mistakes. This team has much, much more talent. It's nice to see them do the little things too...

1) Stop the run (Earl Mitchell). Our run D will be much improved with this guy in the game. Even showed some interior pass rush
2) See an ILB make a sideline to sideline tackle (Reuben Foster). This guy does have "IT". Man his speed is impressive. Last year, any of those guys we trotted out there would have whiffed.
3) Safety play was impressive. E Reid looking strong in this scheme. Is he poised for a breakout year? Jerome coming out of nowhere making some plays. Aside from the goal line TD, (which came on a turnover) this was very encouraging.
4) Pass rush from Carradine? Even made a nice play stopping the run. He's been the preseason hero for 3 or 4 years now.. so hopefully it continues in to the reg. season.
5) Pass protection was stellar. Albeit, many Denver d-starters weren't in the game. Hoyer made some nice throws. Juszczyk & Kittle with some nice catch & run plays. Making defenders miss or just running them over.

I'm still not buying this is a 8 or 9 win team. We will lose some heart breakers because we are a young team but I finally feel like we have a foundation. Something to build on. That in itself is encouraging.
Tank quietly had the best game of any d lineman. I didn't think that was possible, but good for him.

Agreed, thanks "Dad".

Game sounded not so good until you watch and really know the full story.

Not really concerned. First half we moved the ball well and 4 stupid/wonky TOs.

2Nd half scoring was 14-13 us.

Was content on what i saw to hold me over till next game.

Haha...I don't blame you for not reading. Another poster asked what I may have seen as as result of snap counts this week compared to last.

Yeah, clearly they were trying to get some looks for the veterans and injured players coming back. I'm sure the young ones weren't impressed. Haha.

I drew that same conclusion. Williams Jr. certainly earned the right to run with the 2's like Magnuson but only 4 snaps? Next week's snap counts for him will tell you all you need to know...goal is to stash him or let him play and see if he performs better than Theus and make the 53. Garnett's injury muddies this a bit.
