That #2 QB spot, and whether to keep Barkley is a nice debate. Why did he get so little playing time? Coaches said that there's enough film on him to know what he can do. Is that the truth, or was he being phased out? It's not like he has experience in Kyle's offense. If he was slotted into the #2, he needed more reps to familiarize with the offense.

Honestly, you would think that if Barkley was being phased out they would've cut him a week ago. He didn't look too bad in the first preseason game, it's just Beathard looked good hence getting more time in game two.
Teams may still want to carry 4 QBs in preseason and it doesn't make sense to pick up a free agent QB this late (after 2 preseason games) into the offseason and have him pick up the playbook.

Don't get me wrong, Shanahan might have the world of confidence in Beathard and Barkley most definitely could be cut. We shall see, but if you ask me, I personally wouldn't go into the season with Hoyer and Beathard as my #1 and #2, especially when you have a QB sitting there with actual game time experience and has worked with your playbook.

Sorry I just don't buy into the preseason all-pro's as much as some do in here.

Wow lol...this is why some guys we want on our PS will make it there because there's just so many players that will be available.

I don't think highly of Barkley as maybe you do? Not implying you think he's good, but I think he's a bad QB. If the team cuts him, I think he'll be available all season, chillin on his couch. Keep an extra OL/WR/Safety. Bring Barkley back when needed. This also allows Beathard to take all backup snaps in practice during the season.

Great minds think alike!

Not like I'm a Barkley fan but Hoyer making it through the whole season is maybe a 50/50 proposition at best, and Beathard has looked pretty bad against backups for two weeks in a row now. I think they've gotta keep three.
If Hoyer gets hurt again, he's out of our long term plans so we might as well see what we have in Beathard and tank the season while we wait on Kirk.

Barkley isn't going to win anything and he looked just as bad against 3rd and 4th stringers.

100%.

So what if Hoyer gets hurt... get to develop the rookie and see what he's got while indirectly tanking for a better draft position. Barkley on speed dial.

I agree - put the rook in while we position ourselves for a top 3 pick.
LOL the Ravens cut Zuttah. He must be finished...
I don't know if we'll keep Barkley or not, and I don't know who would be the better backup in the short term. What I do know is that John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan do not want to "tank" the season. They want to start building a winning attitude here, and will believe that will have more tangible benefits than a few draft positions.

If they believe Barkley will be more ready to step in in the near term, that will be a powerful incentive to keep him, offset by the last player lost because of keeping him. It will come down to named players, and will be discussed by the whole staff. We'll see what happens.
