10 FGs
3 TDs
4 punts
0 three and outs

2 total three and outs in Garoppolo's three starts.

a measly 7% 3 and out. Anyone wondering why our defense suddenly looks a little better?

I agree, a good QB can mask a lot of defensive weakness. Hope ShanaLynch is careful with that when they strategize who they need in upgrading the defense. Having said that, *WOW.* I just can't believe that it took Jimmy a measly month to become good at the Kyle offense, it took a whole *Year* for Matt Ryan to do the same thing.

This is the very next play after the Hyde catch above.
Empty set again. Red are rushers, blue DE will drop into coverage. This time, ARobinson is lined up wide to the left, opposite Adoree Jackson.

Another free rusher, but JG sees the cushion Jackson is playing with and targets ARobinson.

Two 2v1s (red), one 1v1 (Beadles), 1 free rusher.

+3 yards, but most importantly JG avoids another sack and "makes the OL look good" in the boxscore.

In the 11 games with Hoyer/Beathard starting we averaged 3.5 three and outs per game. Oddly enough, we had 19 with Hoyer and 19 with Beathard.

This is two plays after the ARob catch above. Another empty backfield formation, but this time TEN brings the heat with 5 rushers. I want to get on to other things so I'll just show the gif. They drop the DE over Staley to create a 2v1, as if Staley is the one that needs help. He the least of the 5 OL that needs help. While Kilgore, Fusco, and Beadles are all 1v1 in space. Sacked.

Here's a great play that shows JG's growing chemistry with Goodwin.

This is the 2nd drive of the game and we're going to run a "pin" concept(post+in). We come out in 21 personnel and TEN responds with cover 1 man. They're going to bring both their OLB's in pass rush for a 5 man rush.

TEN tried to press jam our receivers. They succeed on Bourne(i think) but Goody does a good job slipping the jam and getting inside leverage. Jimmy sees the Mike and SS fly out on the RB's. He knows it's man-coverage here combined with no bail on the press coverage.

The TED backer actually blows his coverage leaving Celek open. But, JG doesn't settle for the underneath. It's a hi/lo read and the TE is the 3rd read in the progression. He sees Goodwin has leverage with a backtracking safety, he knows this route has won. Beadles is beaten but check out how fast JG's release is. Note where the edge rusher and Goody are.

From his back foot to this screenshot even Goody could only move 3 yards....Also, the ball is already out and Goodwin is just now starting his break. That means he started his throwing motion before Goody started his break. That's throwing with anticipation. Something we didn't fully see in his first couple starts. That's exciting growth as well. Shows that with more time with all his receivers it's gonna be special.

4Q, 1st & 10. TEN drops the DE lined up over Staley into coverage while bringing the 4th rusher from the OL's right side. LeBeau schemes another unblocked rusher versus an empty backfield look, but JG again completes a pass versus AJackson. This time on a Goodwin Curl. +5

Just GIF's fest....

TEN brings the house and get another unblocked rusher but Jimmy still gets the ball out to Juice on 3rd and 7 for a first down, lol....

I got a bit out of order, this play is from the 2Q.
vs Cover 1 blitz. TEN comes with a stunt into the A gap with two LBs.

The short middle of the field is usually available to attack when a team comes with a blitz while playing Cover1. TEN helps combat this by having the two slot defenders take inside leverage - to protect the middle of the field. No way to be sure, but maybe TTaylor has an option route here. He sees the defender taking away the middle and he runs and Out. B

JG looking to Taylor the whole way as #55 loops through versus empty backfield.

+17. TTaylor is the king of slants so TEN takes it away. No problem. JG loves to throw the short Out.

In addition to these plays, there were two other instances in the game where the 49ers went empty. One was the throw into the endzone where Goodwin had to break up a possible INT (JG threw it off his backfoot). The other was on the final drive when Taylor caught a short pass. No doubt Dick LeBeau had a plan when the 49ers went empty, and JG does like to go empty for the quick passing game.

jonnydel. In this gif, notice how when Celek motions wide, TEN is in man but they don't have any defender follow Celek. Instead, they shift down one. While this helps disguise coverage, it also puts a mismatch in the slot with a LB on a WR (Bourne). Any thoughts on why this is a done?

Frickin Hyde man...wanted to show on this play how Kyle has subtle built in rubs to help free up WRs against man coverage. Mesh concept is used to bust man coverage, but where Juice's wheel route comes from allows it to benefit from a pick from Bourne's route.

The LB covering Juice has to work over the top of Bourne and the CB covering Bourne. This earns Juice a quick window for JG to target.

Forgot when this play was, but just wanted to show that Kyle will sprinkle in RPOs (run/pass option).
JG is given the option to handoff to Hyde for outside zone right, or throw the backside slant to Goodwin. Goodwin aligns with a tight split, well inside the numbers. A CB that sees this will align with outside leverage, giving up the inside release, because the CB knows he has a lot of help towards the middle of the field.

CB gives the inside release to Goodwin, uncontested. That CB isn't scared of a slant because he has all that help in the middle. But the flow of the OL and RBs on the outside zone right pulls all the box defenders to the right side (from OL perspective).

And that opens up the slant. +11

Really lucky that the safety stayed home just enough to get in front of Goodwin. A couple more steps to his left and #11 is gone for 6.

I remember a play like this in the first qtr, and I think Hyde got tackled in the backfield for a loss. Hyde had a couple of runs to the right that he just could not get any yardage out of, and I thought it was Hyde lacking speed, great play design to take advantage of a defensive overload! Great work JD and Thl408! Best thread in the WebZone!
