Jimmy got such a short compact throwing motion. Looking like he has T-Rex arm out there

Wanted to touch on the Kittle TD because they were able to take advantage of both what they'd been trying to hit when JG thew the pick and JAX still trying to squat on underneath stuff. Like Thl noted JAX likes to play cover 2 zone in the red-zone, like us. That can leave you susceptible to corner routes or intermediate middle routes. Knowing that and knowing Kyle knows that they look to run a defense to almost bait that play. They play a soft tampa-2 zone. The corners are going to play soft to squeeze any corner routes and the tampa 2 allows the safeties to play wider than normal. In this one they try and not show the defense too much but the top safety gives it away. We're just running a double slant/flat concept. The curl over the middle is always the 3rd in the progression. The biggest key to this identifying your key read on the play. It's the hook/curl defender and/or flat defender against cover 3.

At the snap Jimmy sees the hook/curl defender move out and the safety sitting on a slant route. The middle defender turns to get deep into his middle zone.

The one area a tampa-2 is especially vulnerable is the short middle, as you see here. They've got the slant/flat defeated the whole way. So, Jimmy gets to his 3rd read right away.

This is where having a QB with a quick release and zip on the ball is so helpful. The window opens and closes very, very quickly.

Timing on the throws are almost impeccable. Wouldn't be surprised if Chip Kelly jizzing on Jimmy's game tapes

^^ Wow #50 almost got there, but like the Bourne slant, every bit of JG's quick release helps. Good point about playing Tampa2 this close to the end zone - how the short middle is open. On the INT, Goodwin was wide open in the middle. Perhaps this was discussed during the half and on this 3rd quarter Kittle TD, it was exploited.

Chip Kelly would be sitting there talking about how much better Jimmy would be with more tempo.....

Peep that release time though, as soon as he cocks back, it's already too late.

49ers were able to hit a few bootleg/slide concepts for big plays, taking advantage of JAC's aggressive pursuit to the ball. Playaction to sell outside zone, bootleg JG opposite the flow.
1. +17 to Juice
2. +21 Kittle
3. +4 Goodwin (3rd & 2 converted)

49ers also got an auto first down when Goodwin was held (more like clotheslined) in the backfield on a 3rd & 2 - also off a slide concept. That's 4 key positive plays off misdirection.

That's what she said.

You know what is great about the stretch zone runs? The playactions are easier for the OL to disguise because the stretch zone doesn't require immediately blocking upfield and give away the pass play. Safeties and LB's key on the OL getting upfield to alert run/pass and OL that are accustomed to immediately blocking upfield on run plays tend to get downfield too far if the pass is late. Or on traditional offenses, run plays have OL block upfield. If they aren't moving upfield, then it is most likely a draw or Playaction.

The stretch runs disguise all of this much better.

Also, play action can be washed away by the QB. For example, Alex Smith and Kap had horrible habits of running themselves out of bounds. The better QB's understand where to sit after a play fake to buy more time and allow for more possible targets rather than running themselves to the sidelines which usually results in only one available target. Alex Smith still does this. SMH

49ers run a Spacing type combination to JG's left. Bourne lines up to the single side. JG seemed to make a presnap read of targeting Bourne's slant. I think it's because of where the orange LB lined up, almost directly over center, very close to the middle of the field.
vs Cover6

JG takes the snap and targets Bourne with no hesitation.

Geez, that window is like the size of a basketball hoop, the LB actually had good reaction time but still got diced!

Yup. To sell playaction on outside zone, no one has to pull, and the first few steps look the same to the defense whether it's an actual OZ run or it's playaction. Inside zone and many power concepts require driving ahead in the OL's initial steps. Outside zone also elongates the timing of the playaction. The excerpt below is Kyle talking about being in shotgun vs under center, but the point he is making is that he wants to prolong the duration of the playaction. Outside zone helps the cause.

"Every time you're under center, you've got a lot more run options and a lot more play-action options and a lot more movement options off of your runs," Shanahan said. "Your play choices are endless. You can do everything. Once you get into the 'gun, certain things are like cut in half. Play-action is not as good because it happens quicker. You can't hold the ball out there for as long and stuff. It just eliminates being as balanced."
