Here's another crucial breakdown on the drive. It all but guarantees Seattle a FG. It's a weird play.
Here, Seattle is going to run 11 personnel. They're going to run a switch verticals concept to the bottom and show the same to the top but break it off to an in route and a comeback on the outside route. We're going to run cover 1 "lurk".
At the snap, note that Jimmy Graham chips Armstead. that prevents him from getting a good rush off the snap.
The backend does a good job in coverage. You have Robinson and K'Waun Williams on the bottom and they handle the switch well without running into one another. On the other side you see tartt is in position to drive on the in route and Ray Ray is in good coverage on the vertical route.
This is where it gets weird. After Graham chipped Armstead, his reaction was to bear hug Graham....I mean, I know sometimes they want you to hit the TE so he doesn't have a free release, but this is weird.....
Graham doesn't appreciate the move and tussles with Armstead who loses his balance and falls to the ground.
Not only does he fall, but he takes out another D-lineman with him..... Now, this whole thing is full of weirdness and fail. First, he should be focused on rushing the QB, not bear hugging a TE. Second, he shouldn't bear hug him this long, forget to keep contain on a mobile QB and then knock down another D-lineman who's pursuing the QB.... Though, all that shouldn't have to be said.
Here's why this hurts. You see Williams had great coverage on his man when Wilson starts to escape. If he's just kept in the pocket the other guys would've gotten there and you either have a sack or throw away on the 30 yard line. A 47 yard FG in the rain is no gimmie - just look at the XP they missed.
Because Williams is in over-the-top coverage(which he should be with safety help rotated over to the other side of the field) and the pass rush failing to get there, Lockette is able to break his route off without Williams knowing. This results in a 22 yard gain and sets up 1st and goal.
