LB's - Bow took a lot of heat this week, especially after Grant Cohn's article about his "6 missed tackles". However, much like anything GC puts out, it was rubbish. I counted 2 missed tackles. The other 4 were timely screen grabs that made it look like a missed tackle when in fact, if he'd had made those tackles he'd have some explaining to do by peeing in a cup......

No! Grant Cohn is utterly clueless about football? Say it ain't so!
here's another key play on a drive where LA scored.

We hadn't been getting much pressure so Saleh is going to try and manufacture it.

He's going to show cover 1 by pressing the CB's pre-snap and giving the single high look. right before the snap our CB's bail out into a deep 1/3 zone. We're going to drop AA into coverage and overload the strong side with Harold and Bow coming on a blitz. We'll play a fire zone 3 deep behind it.

LA counters with a well timed pass play. One of the older passing concepts in the league made popular by Bill Walsh is the slant/flat concept. The QB will read the inside defender to see if they go out with the flat or stay in on the slant. You throw where ever they aren't.

You start to see the zone blitz taking shape and Goff is locked in on his "key" defender.

You see the outside defender has to respect the flat route on 2nd and 4 so it opens up a big hole in the defense. Goff throws with great anticipation here.

He hits Watkins in stride for a big gain. That's just a really good call at the right time against our defense. I don't fault the players here, bad timing on the playcall by Saleh.

Yeah, I find that oddly suspicious. 62 cameras are used for the Supetbowl alone. This was a nationally televised Thursday night game and the All22 is set up in your own stadium for the coaches to use so call me skeptical that they couldn't find a single camera view on that one.
This is awesome man thank you!
Here was another critical 3rd down later in the driver after Watkins' 22 yard gain.

LA is going to come with a little "divide". They'll run a streak up the sidleline with a short post inside with Cooper Kupp(whom I wanted in the draft, btw).

After the zone blitz fiasco, we're going to show the same look, this time we're going to stick with cover 1 man with a "lurk".

Goff now knows he's got Kupp isolated on Williams and he's going to move here after seeing the levels side is defeated. Kupp makes one jab step outside before he cuts inside on his post - Williams bites hard.

Williams is beat and Goff moved Bow with his eyes, now there is a ton of space for Kupp to work.

Williams falls down and bow takes a poor angle to the carrier. Though, the damage was already done as they had the 1st down yardage. Williams getting picked on again.

Here's the all-22 so you can see for yourself. There is a little push-off but compare it to Watkins....not even close. Those, Hoyer also had Garcon at the bottom....

Nice jd. I'm not going to comment on all that right now but had to mention how Watkins pushed off KWilliams on an Out route in the same way TTaylor did - no flag. And it was a key 3rd down conversion.

I'm so sick of this crap going the other direction on third down. No calls against the opponent, and huge calls against us. It seems like third down. I feel like a broken record complaining about officiating all the time

I came out from watching this film scared of what McVay, Goff, Watkins, and Gurley can be. All with potential and still learning. Goff made about 3 passes that were flashes of a top QB. He was going through his reads and to his checkdown. Anticipation throws against the correct coverage. Between his good throws, Watkins showing why he was a high pick, and McVay using good use of tempo, quick turnover, the 49ers defense was on their heels nearly the entire time.

Lots of good things from the offense in this game. Kyle vs Wade is going to be fun. LAR went with a large variety of coverages in this game. I noted Cover2 zone, Cover1, Cover1 blitz, Fire zone, Cover3, in the 1st half. Also saw Quarters, and coverages where they had no deep safeties but chose to double cover Garcon/Taylor. Just a bunch of things trying to throw off Hoyer/Kyle. And the 49ers had their best offensive outing of the year.
NFL has changed what rule?

This was a key 3rd down as the game was 34-27 at this time. 3rd and 4 and LA is going to run 2 concepts against us. Drive on the single receiver side and an "Ohio" on the 2 receiver side with Watkins inside. We're going to switch up from our cover 3 zone and run a cover 1 "lurk". It's not the same as a cover 1 "hole" as a "lurk" will follow the QB's eyes and a "hole" will sit in the middle of the field always.

We do a good job against the "drive" concept. Robinson blankets his guy across the field and Tartt is in a trail technique for his guy knowing he'll have inside help. Ray Ray is waiting on the RB leaking out of the backfield and Bow is following the QB's eyes. Here's where it's a boo boo. Watkins engages in some serious contact with Williams at the top of the route and Williams gives up outside leverage.

The contact is what makes this play, without it, Williams can play with outside leverage and he's got two help defenders on the inside. Instead, it's a simple pitch and catch.

+15 on 3rd and 4 and the Rams go on to score on this drive....

Goff has some trust with Watkins to throw it well before Watkins exits his break. Accurate and on time. This was a good key frame. Big 3rd down conversion.

Just to stay with Watkins to show how he can be good when healthy.
DJ vs Watkins
Pin concept vs Cover 1 blitz

Watkins releases inside and quickly stacks DJ. Goff mid windup and Ward is breaking.

+40 yards. I thought Ward's path was fine. Good throw to angle Watkins towards the sideline, and away from Ward who almost got there.

wouldnt it help if DJ at least jammed Watkins a little??? I mean he's practically pressed
Here was another key 3rd down - this one went for a TD and was the score to get them to 41. 3rd and 3.

Here's some kind of busted coverage. I have a hard time figuring out exactly what we were running. I think we were running man-cover 1 but it's hard to tell. There's a couple weird things on the play. McVay uses tempo the way Chip Kelly thought he was. He comes out of the huddle really fast into a bunch formation and as soon as they're lined up they snap the ball. This makes it hard on the defense to communicate who's go who. They run a simple "spacing" concept.

This is why it's hard to tell - Robinson first bites down towards the flat, they turns and see's his man running free and bails out as Ray Ray heads to the flat at the top. On the bottom they man up on the 2 outside routes and Johnson sits over the top of the inside curl route.

So, now you have 2 defenders on the middle curl route.

Goff gives a slight pump fake to the right and moves Bowman out of the middle which opens up the area for Watkins even more.

So now, you have 6 defenders on 4 receivers on the outsides and no one over the middle. Watkins has a ton of room to work and ends up plowing into the endzone on this play. Like I said, I don't know what the playcall was on this, maybe someone can figure it out for me but there has to be a bust somewhere in here. This is not how you draw up plays.

One of the advantages to running a certain coverage a lot (Cover3) is being able to familiarize with the route combinations that offenses will use against it, and using that familiarity to defend it better.

Cover 3 vs Switch Verticals
The assignment for the sideline deep 1/3 (DJ) is to match the #1 if he goes vertical.

#1 goes vertical and DJ matches his Post route. The "switch" is when the #1 and #2 swap designations.

By the time the switch happens, DJ has left his deep 1/3. You can see Ward pointing out with his arm there. I'd like to speculate that Ward wanted DJ to pass off coverage of the Post and get back to his zone because Ward sees the switch happening. Ward can take the Post. This would allow DJ to possibly INT this throw, a bit of a trap coverage. As the defense sees this concept more, they will find a better way to defend it.
KWilliams not playing this route well. That could be the best way to defend this.

The stutter step from the #2 coincides with the clearing out of the target area by the Post route.
