I don't doubt that he and Saban have perfectly logical reasons to teach this technique. Who am I to question them. Just seems like it's a situation (underthrown pass, not looking back) where the CB can do everything correct and still possibly draw the DPI.

Is the logic behind this coverage that it focuses the DB eyes entirely on the hands of the WR?

Turning back could slow down the CB and looking up for the ball could make the CB miss the chance to play it if it whizzes right by his face. Similar to how Reid got beat by Even Engram on the TD this past week. Reid tried to locate the ball and right when he did that, the ball went right by his face.

In theory that makes sense....but as you've noted it leaves the DB exposed in underthrown situations.

To me this is what I would call 1/solo, some of you may know it by 4/lock or whatever verbage you may be used to. Essentially it is quarters to the front side with the backside safety responsible for vertical of #3 with the Sam (middle of 3 LB) responsible for the low wall on #3. The CB and OLB to the nub TE side are responsible for the Y and TB (hence the solo/lock call).
Now the tight splits and TB + H check release and exchange concept messes with all this so I could be wrong. However it's one of my favorite formations and this is a common 3x1 adjustment for the back end.
By the way, life long 49er fan, 1st post since 2005 when I was heavily debating in the Alex/Rodgers decision. I am currently a college offensive coordinator in a little bit of career limbo. So if you all approve I would like to contribute to this thread while I have way too much free time and looking for a new job. If anyone has something that peaks their interest I would be happy to dive into some special projects.

Just need a recommendation for a video screen capture so I can do some fancy gifs/clips like the rest of you. Using a chromebook if anyone has any rec's. Thanks!

This is something sort of minimal but I'll say first, I love the design of Shanahan's offense. The multiple formation and presnap movement combined with solid scheming, very effective with talent and more important experienced talent. The screen game is always hit or missed but for the current 49ers more of a miss, particularly against the Giants. Screen game is all about the small nuances like in this play on the 1st drive of the game.
3rd and 21 on 28 yard line
Soft man coverage for the Giants, Playside LB (red box) is always key in the first level of a screen.
OLine does a good job of selling the pass pro. Fusco gets a little too caught up sliding back on the backside shade.
Problem is two-fold. Fusco getting caught up, delaying getting out to the playside LB and Breida working for too much width. On this type of screen Breida should settle 2-4 yards outside the playside OT, allowing his frontside guard leverage on the PSLB.
Potentially a big play, but poor timing/relationship turns out to a 3 yard gain. Only reason I bring this up is it was a reoccurring theme throughout this game. The Juice fumble later was the same issue leading to a turnover in the green zone, and again with Juice/Breida where minimal gains could have been big plays.
Offense has potential even with sub-par talent. Good design and play call, poor execution. Going to take time (next year) and some added talent to see this offense execute at full capacity.

Not much to say on this one but a good look at the identity of the offense. CJ looks to audible but I have a feeling it was an "oppo" or dummy call. End up running Stretch/Outside Zone weak. Trent Brown attempts to reach the EMOLS (#72), Breida does a good job of reading the wide 5tech to 3tech and hits it downhill. Staley does a great job getting to the WSLB.
Don't call it a cut back, word to Alex Gibbs. Sure Coach Gibbs has been brought up several times but this clip reminds me of his teach tapes. For those not familiar, enjoy.

"That running back is the mvp, but I guaranteed I ripped his nuts when he got back to the sideline" I seriously can listen to Alex Gibbs talk about zone blocking all day.
Here's some zone runs out of Mike Shanahan's 2002 playbook
WEAK
STRONG
