It's a battle for them just to get to the edge.
This is something sort of minimal but I'll say first, I love the design of Shanahan's offense. The multiple formation and presnap movement combined with solid scheming, very effective with talent and more important experienced talent. The screen game is always hit or missed but for the current 49ers more of a miss, particularly against the Giants. Screen game is all about the small nuances like in this play on the 1st drive of the game.
3rd and 21 on 28 yard line
Soft man coverage for the Giants, Playside LB (red box) is always key in the first level of a screen.
OLine does a good job of selling the pass pro. Fusco gets a little too caught up sliding back on the backside shade.
Problem is two-fold. Fusco getting caught up, delaying getting out to the playside LB and Breida working for too much width. On this type of screen Breida should settle 2-4 yards outside the playside OT, allowing his frontside guard leverage on the PSLB.
Potentially a big play, but poor timing/relationship turns out to a 3 yard gain. Only reason I bring this up is it was a reoccurring theme throughout this game. The Juice fumble later was the same issue leading to a turnover in the green zone, and again with Juice/Breida where minimal gains could have been big plays.
Offense has potential even with sub-par talent. Good design and play call, poor execution. Going to take time (next year) and some added talent to see this offense execute at full capacity.

By the way, life long 49er fan, 1st post since 2005 when I was heavily debating in the Alex/Rodgers decision. I am currently a college offensive coordinator in a little bit of career limbo. So if you all approve I would like to contribute to this thread while I have way too much free time and looking for a new job.

Just need a recommendation for a video screen capture so I can do some fancy gifs/clips like the rest of you. Using a chromebook if anyone has any rec's. Thanks!
For conversion of screencaps to .GIF, I use: https://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-gif Free and fast.
Mediafire can host the images and won't timeout like photobucket (not sure).

I think this is through week 11. A 5.4 y/play is middle of the pack. I'm surprised at how far ahead of the league SF and NE is in number of plays.

The CB and OLB to the nub TE side are responsible for the Y and TB (hence the solo/lock call).
Now the tight splits and TB + H check release and exchange concept messes with all this so I could be wrong. However it's one of my favorite formations and this is a common 3x1 adjustment for the back end.

It that is thru week 11, that puts us at about 21 personnel 29%(190/658 plays)of the time. Kyle was at 24% last year in ATL.

I am trying to get through the game film, but #62 (magnuson) is very hard to watch even for an unheralded rookie that is rooooough. Would hate to have seen the grades or be in the meeting room on that one.
On a related note...I'm not a big fan of Trent Brown, but compared to Magnuson, boy that's a big jump. Sorry CJ

Best thread ever! Cheers guys, I watched some Coach Gibbs videos and it blew my mind.
I was then inspired to watch some Coaches film of our running game. I got the basics and from what I saw Kilgore was performing well, from how Coacch Gibbs was describing it the center is extremely important, it might explain why he hasn't yet been axed even though he's clearly struggling in the pass game.
Are you guys seeing this? He seems to consistently get to the 2nd level and get in the correct lanes

Yeah Magnus has a rough game for sure. I gave him a pass on it because Shanny said he suffered a severe sprain. Kyle even said he didn't know how Magnus even finished the game because it was so bad. That and going against Michael Bennett on almost every play made it a very long day for the rook.

I haven't been on the Kilgore hate train as much as everyone else for the reason stated above. While he hasn't been all-world he hasn't been the source of all our woes. To me, the biggest issue is LG with Tomlinsen. He's gotten blown up on running plays, missed blocking assignments and whiffed on blocks altogether.
We're just in a dearth of lacking consistent talent and production across the board. The problem is, LT will miss on one play, then Fusco, then a T, then Kilgore then our QB will miss a guy, then a receiver will fall down or get knocked down or we'll have a false start penalty or a holding penalty - whatever it is they'll seem to jump in from different spots.
We're doing the things bad teams do and not executing on a regular basis. This has been a problem on the team for the past 4 years going back to Harbaugh's last year. To me, one of our biggest problems is finding consistent leadership from the quarterback position. When you have a strong leader in the huddle those things won't be as much of a problem anymore.

Serious question?.....do you feel like Kyles playcalling is hanging his QB out to dry? This seems to be the big narrative going around. I don't really see it like that but since you are cutting up games and specifically watching OL does it feel like Kyle is calling an abundance of long developing plays?

No. He's calling stuff like BW used to. Has the possibility of the deep play and you look for the deep play first and work down from there. One of the issues that makes it look that way is that CJ can rush his reads. I've seen him move to the 3rd route in the progression by his 2nd drop back step and he never gave the concept the chance to work. It's hard for a guy in his position because you like a QB that can move quickly through progressions but you also have to stick with it until you can know what it will be. For example, there was a play we had a drive concept going and he moved off the drive to his 3rd progression after the LB took 2 dropback steps. The in route on the drive concept was open, but he had already moved off the concept and then hung on to the ball too long.
It'll look like the play was too long in developing but it was there to be made.
