"You have to be able to make those layups, those easy throws and easy reads..."
Making "lay ups" is something Kurt Warner used to talk about when discussing QBing. jonnyd called the first cutup he posted a "big boy" throw (to Goodwin). Those are nice to be a high-end QB, but what about the easy throws that takes what the defense gives? Those are a must if a QB wants to move steadily down the field.
This is the play where JG puts Hyde in motion, then tells Hyde to line up on the other side of the field. If you turn up the volume on the TV, you can hear JG say, "run a Go route" (5:00 mark of 2Q).
Hyde motions out of the backfield and lines up wide outside the numbers. A CB lines up across from him - zone coverage. With a 2 safety look, this is possible Cover2 or Quarters. The depth at which they line up suggests Quarters (10-12 yards, shallow). The two defenders in blue are the Curl/Flat defenders. The blue defender over Goodwin is a LB.
49ers are running what I've referred to as Fade-Out, or what jonnyd calls "Ohio".
JG takes the snap and looks to the safeties. The safeties do not get into a fast backpeddle - it's Quarters. Fangio is much more known to play Qurters than Cover2 so this isn't a surprise for JG. The Curl/Flat defenders in Quarters will play inside-out, meaning they will defend the middle and work outside. This means they will play the slot WRs with inside leverage to keep routes from exploiting the seam between the two safeties. Goodwin's quick Out route will win versus the Curl/Flat defender's inside leverage as Hyde's Go route clears the CB from the area.
Easy 7 yards to move the chains. You give it, JG takes it.
While not as difficult as it would be if JG was under center, JG shows the footwork necessary to consistently throw to the left side of the field iwth accuracy on a quick developing concept. Get used to JG throwing quick Outs for easy 6-8 yard gains.
