Here's the very next play after the Goodwin triple team play. It's a big play in the game, 3rd and 1, final drive. This is an example of how Jimmy's success in the pass game set up the run game.
3rd and 1 most teams would expect a run but Jimmy had a ton of success on 3rd down so far. So, CHI plays it like a pass play because we're in the pistol. We're just going to run a HB belly play. CHI ends up blitzing off the edge so the line slants down. Trying to bring pressure, they let open a run play.
You see CHI slanting inside and plugging up the middle. I can't say for certain this isn't also just a HB dive. Without knowing the play call it's impossible to know for sure.
With all the traffic up the middle Hyde does a good job cutting back and finding the opening.
From this angle you can see how the pass set up the run. The blitzing DB who is the EMLOS never takes a run stopping angle. He's trying to play the QB for a pass play and drives upfield, opening up a huge cutback lane.
Hello running lane, nice to see you once again.

"You have to be able to make those layups, those easy throws and easy reads..."
Making "lay ups" is something Kurt Warner used to talk about when discussing QBing. jonnyd called the first cutup he posted a "big boy" throw (to Goodwin). Those are nice to be a high-end QB, but what about the easy throws that takes what the defense gives? Those are a must if a QB wants to move steadily down the field.
This is the play where JG puts Hyde in motion, then tells Hyde to line up on the other side of the field. If you turn up the volume on the TV, you can hear JG say, "run a Go route" (5:00 mark of 2Q).
Hyde motions out of the backfield and lines up wide outside the numbers. A CB lines up across from him - zone coverage. With a 2 safety look, this is possible Cover2 or Quarters. The depth at which they line up suggests Quarters (10-12 yards, shallow). The two defenders in blue are the Curl/Flat defenders. The blue defender over Goodwin is a LB.
49ers are running what I've referred to as Fade-Out, or what jonnyd calls "Ohio".
JG takes the snap and looks to the safeties. The safeties do not get into a fast backpeddle - it's Quarters. Fangio is much more known to play Qurters than Cover2 so this isn't a surprise for JG. The Curl/Flat defenders in Quarters will play inside-out, meaning they will defend the middle and work outside. This means they will play the slot WRs with inside leverage to keep routes from exploiting the seam between the two safeties. Goodwin's quick Out route will win versus the Curl/Flat defender's inside leverage as Hyde's Go route clears the CB from the area.
Easy 7 yards to move the chains. You give it, JG takes it.
While not as difficult as it would be if JG was under center, JG shows the footwork necessary to consistently throw to the left side of the field iwth accuracy on a quick developing concept. Get used to JG throwing quick Outs for easy 6-8 yard gains.

Here's another play that exemplifies his accuracy and ball placement.
Here we're going to run a PIN concept off of PA. PIN is the post+in combo. Goodwin is running the "in" route.
We run PA to grab the underneath coverage.
When Jimmy turns back around he peaks at the safeties as he's moving his eyes to the backside LB(trevathean)
He sees Goodwin is open over the middle. The PA, coupled with the post threat have opened up the middle of the field. It's a tight window but he can make this throw.
Knowing Fangio's defense is so key on not giving up the big play I have to believe they were looking to attack the intermediate area here. He saw the single safety pre-snap and knew bourne would be taken away. So, after the run fake he peaks back to make sure the throwing lane is open.
This is such a great throw because he has to put it over the LB but with enough zip that the safety and other LB can't collapse on the play. He has an ability to throw from different arm angles and it's on display here. Not the almost Manning-esque high arm slot here.
The funny thing is, because he gets such good touch on the ball, trevathean knows he has no shot at the ball and turns to look for the receiver being thrown to.
That's a purdy throw...
That's such a nice throw to hit a guy who then can run after the catch and get more yards.

On that Pin concept. Nice example of him hitting the back foot and firing the ball. Late motion by Juice to get the LBs peaking at the backfield, thinking run play. Trust the concept to earn separation. Trust the accuracy.

I think in the Jimmy G thread there was a sentiment that it seemed like Jimmy G was in the shotgun more than usual. Beathard attempted passes from the gun 65% of the time. So far Jimmy G is at 67%. These numbers are in line with Kyle's offenses the last couple of years (66% in '15 & 61% in '16).
Fwiw, Jimmy G is 12 for 13 undercenter.

Like I said this FO/coaching staff have a plan
It was amazing to see the amount of 3rd down conversions JG made (not short conversions either), it was also amazing to see our defense not out there for like 50+ snaps (TOP for SF was almost 40 mins)
I think I read that DeFo had like 26 snaps! That's unheard of....I also think Buck is dealing with a little bit of a ankle injury.
Penalties killed us in the RZ, that's something that needs to be cleaned up...we also need to get Jimmy GQ some skilled players and a better OL.
arrow up!!!
Penalties been an issue since pre season

Someone said they'd like to see Jimmy hit some of those deep 30+ throws. One thing Fangio is big on is, stuff the D and don't give up the big pass play. So, there weren't really opportunities for big plays. Here's an example.
we're going to run to run fakes and try and get Goodwin deep down the field. I messed up on my play art here. It's celek that's going to run a hook over the middle and then Juice is gonna just carry out a run fake and sort of leak out into the flat. Chicago plays cover 3 zone.
The first run fake grabs the underneath coverage.
As we carry out the 2nd run fake, notice how all 3 deep defenders locate Goodwin. You think he was on scouting report? LOL.
See how Goodwin is triple covered down the field? That's called taking the top off of the defense. Celek was also doubled. Right here Jimmy is looking for Goodwin, but he doesn't just let it rip in a YOLO throw. He never panics and realizes there must be another option. A lot of QB's would either rip it here or throw it away.
he never panics but calmly moves to his left and hits Juice for 3 yards. While not a big time gain, he kept from making the negative play on the final drive and setup the next play.
"YOLO throw"

In Kyle Shanahan's offense, who usually called and switch the protection scheme?
