One guy walked into a job with good talent throughout the roster which had been poorly coached and managed.

Another guy essentially walked into a job with expansion level talent and is rebuilding on the fly. It will take time.

Or did he acquire better talent in his o line acquisitions + Woods, Watkins and is actually developing a 1st round qb? We passed on that route. Rams d hasn't been anything special so far.
It was definitely both interesting and fun when you saw Kyle crack open the " real playbook " in the second half. He got way more creative when he sensed the team could actually handle the concepts and that protection would hold up long enough for the deep ball.

The same time Goff got good for the first time: as soon and Jeff Fishhead got kicked to the curb
It was a standard Thursday night game. Booth teams coming in known for their defense and major question marks about offense. Defenses give up 800 yards and 80 points and the offenses look all-world.

The good news is we now have seen what all 3 units CAN do.

As with any young team, it's all about putting together a full game and then playing consistently after that.
Gurley is only running at 3.8 yards per carry. With their new passing game he's got more room but I'd take Hyde over him.

What's really funny is I remember reading a post here that said something like, "it wouldn't surprise me if this is another game like Seattle, where the final score is 9-6." And I thought to myself, "yeah, I could totally see this being a low-scoring battle of incompetence, that sounds about right."

On top of that the Rams added some key weapons and drafted their FQB. The niners are hoping to draft or sign a FQB next off season. Wouldn't mind if the lose the rest of their games as that would set them up to make moves next year to solidify the roster.

Yup, they gave Woods a 5 year $34 million dollar contract and traded their 2nd round pick for Watkins. It's not like they went out and gave cheap one year deals to Aldrick Robinson and Marquise Goodwin. Not to mention going out and getting John Sullivan and Andrew Whitworth, Sullivan was cheap but I thought the 49ers should've picked him up, Whitworth was a pretty penny at 3 years $33 million, wow. Rams went out and spent some money and it showed, biggest contract the 49ers gave was to Garcon but went the cheap route at the QB position. Either way, it isn't the same Rams as last year.

I was surprised his YPC was so low. In yesterday's game it was only 4.0. I wonder how much that average dropped because of all of those goal-line stands? It seemed like he had about 8 carries at the goal line where he gained no yards.

Entertaining game? Check
Competitive team? Check
Still in the running for a high draft pick? (ie possible Franchise qb) Check

Winning all around.

Well we chose to give out 1 year deals to crappy receivers opposed to a long term solutions. We did make a good move with Garcon though so it's not like we came up empty handed.

The Rams were more aggressive and may win the West because of it. Props to them.

Anything at this point. Fusco just isn't good enough to be starting.

So many thoughts running through my head this morning, but I have like 12 observations I just have to share.

1. The refs sucked, on both sides. - Dontae Johnson's DPI to negate Elvis Dumervil's sack, Kyle Jucsyck's holding call, Rashard Robinson's DPI call, Garrett Celek's lack of DPI call, to Trent Taylor's OPI call. All absolute garbage. Trent's was icing on the cake for the night. Triplett's crew is garbage and always has been! Even Aaron Donald's penalty was sh*t! 2 weeks in a row we have been treated unfairly. Great teams I guess overcome that - we are not a great team yet.

2. Said at the beginning of the year this team would lose a lot of close games. We've lost 2 close games so far. Very close games. Sadly, hate to bring it back to the refs but they have been a large part of it. Should have been a DPI on Richard Sherman last week on Garcon, 4th qtr. More on refs.

3. A young team makes mistakes. Loses close games. Makes penalties at key moments. Don't always execute to the highest level. I even would go as far as saying they don't get the benefit of the calls sometimes. This team is showing something though. They are showing some fight. Finally, this team is competing and it's so nice to see.

4. Secondaries will get exposed w/o a lack of pass rush. We were able to generate some pressure in Seattle, and some vs. Carolina. The Rams controlled the LOS on the offensive side of the ball all night. Little to no pass rush. Did we even get a sack? Still think this defense needs a true LEO (it's not Armstead) and I also believe Solomon is playing out of position. Really think he's better suited on the inside. Time will tell. Aaron Lynch disappeared again!

5. Linebacker play for us was not good. Bowman really struggled w/ Gurley. Missed at least 4 tackles. Armstrong was Armstrong. Blown assignments, key penalties, he's at best a backup. Can't wait for the return of Foster. But no sense rushing him.

6. Really like our safety play. Between Ward, Tartt and Reid. Glad Tartt's injury was only a concussion. (Easy for me to say) We have some solid to great safeties in this scheme. Some nice backups in Colbert & Jerome. I think our corners can be ok with a pass rush. Like any defense.

7. Can we make it a point in 2018 offseason to find somebody to block Aaron Donald? Seriously. That guy is so good and so disruptive. He owned Fusco, Tomlinson and Kilgore. When all the chips are on the table, and in the 4th qtr... he laid it on the line and ended the game with a sack. I hope Garnett is that guy but I'm not sure about it. I hope I'm wrong. Gotta find a way to block him to have more success.

8. Pierre Garcon is the real deal. He's never been a big redzone target but my god his hands are something of beauty. He plays so hard, wants to win and puts it all out there on the field. Love his fire. Really glad we have him to teach the youngsters. Best WR since Boldin (maybe better).

9. Trent Taylor - love the guy, but he's still young. Learning the nuances of the NFL. On the 2 pt conversion, if he continues his route to the sticks, we have a tie ball game. Instead, he cuts it short and circles back in to the defender. Rookie mistake. I think we have a very solid slot WR in the future though. Really does remind me of a Wes Welker/Amendola/Edelman. Hope he can stay healthy. Great move on the TD catch also.

10. Love Hyde but still worried he can't make it through the whole season. He battled though.

11. Defense really just didn't play disciplined. 1 or more players vacating zone coverages and chasing guys across the field. Throws the whole flow of the defense off. Got to be more disciplined. Got to be able to play the run better. Gurley would get 2 or 3 yards before he was even touched. I thought Bowman looked like an old man in this contest BTW. He's not built to play 2 games in 5 days.

12. A few questionable defensive play calls, and a few questionable offensive play calls. On the flip side, some really nice play calling by Shanahan. Very creative plays. We were in the game. A fascinating game to say the least. I keep telling myself if we lose, that's good for our draft position. I'm tired of that approach though. Our players need to learn how to win now though... and I think we are getting closer and closer. Like what I see for the future. D-line has to play better next week. 10 days of rest should help.
Excellent thoughts, thanks for sharing.

Agreed.

pierre garcon looks like hel be our new anquan boldin. the chain mover on 3rd down. someone who can put the offense on his back. lets hope his body holds up all year.

At some point during this rebuild (currently in its 3rd year), you'd hope the goal would be for the team to actually win games rather than just position themselves for a higher draft pick.
Let's see, we need:

1. Shut Down CB
2. Franchise QB
3. Speed Edge Rusher

So the 3 most expensive hard to find positions are the ones we need. Just great.
