The secondary played well on Sunday, really impressed with the growth of Mooney Ward, also Lenoir, minus the late hit, Huf, Gipson, excited to see Ji'Ayir Brown to get PT at FS soon enough.

The two personnel concerns we had coming in to the season was the right side of the OL and secondary.
This week we'll probably find out more about the secondary.
Right. Stafford won't be missing wide open guys like Pickett. I did notice that in nickel situations Thomas does come on the field. Teams are going to find him. Let' s see if he's ready
49ers were in nickel on the first play of the PIT game (PIT was in 11 personnel). Immediately, Ambry was playing RCB and Lenoir went to slot. Later in the game (2Q?), the 49ers nickel was Lenoir staying at RCB and Oliver came in to play slot - I don't know whether the 49ers switched back and forth with who was in the slot. Kyle was asked about this in his Wednesday presser and said that it was an adjustment they made, and that Kyle would not reveal why to the reporter that asked the question.
Props to Lenoir for having the flexibility to play two positions (RCB/slot). Kyle challenged the reporter to watch the film and figure out why they switched to Oliver in the slot. I may take him up on that challenge tonight. My initial guess is that it has something to do with Dionte Johnson pulling a hamstring, causing PIT to make some personnel adjustments.
edit: DJohnson pulled his hammy in the 3Q so I don't know if Oliver coming in to play slot had anything to do with Johnson's hammy.
Wilks noted a while back that they'd use both. Lenoir for more shifty WR's and Oliver more for TE's, bigger slot WR's, etc. He felt this was the first time he's had that flexibility.
Let me know if that matches what you find.
Ambry played all of the 1st half while Oliver had 0 snaps. First play for PIT offense in 2nd half is the catch and run where Dionte Johnson pulled a hammy. 49ers were in base defense, so no third CB was on the field. Next play 49er go nickel and in comes Oliver who played all the 3Q and 4Q snaps until garbage time at 30-7.
That's when Ambry got back onto the field to replace Mooney at LCB for PIT's final drive. Ambry then had a collision with #11 and Warner and got a concussion scare, left the game.
So did something Ambry do in the first half get him benched? Unless it was the Johnson hammy that made the switch but I don't think so. After DJohnson left the game with the hammy, Calvin Austin (5'9") came in as the 3rd WR. So either Ambry got benched because of the first half, Wilks wanted a bigger CB (Oliver) to matchup against Calvin Austin, or it was the plan all along to split halves between Ambry and Oliver.
Well, this is as clear as mud. LOL. Wilks, big man, what IS your plan here?
I guess we'll have to see how it goes this weekend and see if a pattern emerges.

Is 9ers4eva happy with the secondary so far? That's the only real question I have.

They are still untested. Lenoir is still as big a ? as we have on the roster and I don't know what Oliver can do yet.

Fair. This week should be a better test and gauge going forward.

I don't understand this take. Lenoir started 13 games last year, not including the playoffs. How can he be a big question mark? Do you think he is going to regress or has peaked as a player at the start of year 3? As for being untested, its most the same secondary with an even better front 4. I agree on Oliver, but outside of that. We know what we have and at their worst, it isn't bad and to repeat they have a better front 4 this year.
If they are still untested in your eyes, so is every unit in the league.

Tre Swilling was elevated for tomorrows game. I personally was hoping Q. Knight would be elevated and get a chance to compete with Oliver at Nickel. Anyone got any good intel on Swilling?

He's untested this year. Last year he was pretty mediocre. Had a better playoffs. I don't see a starting corner with Lenoir long term though. Unfortunately we just don't have much at corner because it's never been prioritized.
If there is a move to make at the deadline it's getting another corner.

The bolded applies to almost everyone in the league. Do you expect him to regress or plateau this year with a better front four in front of him? Did you envision Emmanuel Mosely turning into the corner that he did last year before injury? I think Lenoir will continue to grow but ultimately will play himself off of the team, not due to poor play (and he has some things to correct), but because he can make far more elsewhere. I don't see him turning into an elite corner, but I do envision that he can be a very good starter for us (or any other team for that matter) longterm. I think the coaching staff sees this too which is why they let Mosely walk. I hated the decision, but they must see big things in Lenoir if they were okay with thi. . Too add, Mosely didn't have it altogether in 2019 either.
I think if Lenoir can play disciplined, the secondary can take the next leap in terms of how they rate as a unit.

I would hope he improves but I need to see it. I've seen very little that gives me hope that he's a long term starter.
Team let Moseley walk because they were making a big splash on Hargrave. He isn't a great corner himself imo. Solid at best.
9ers needs to stop getting by on average corner play. Ward has made a difference but he needs help on the other side.
