I'm officially worried for the secondary, mostly CBs. Safeties played fine on first glance.

Rams really showed everyone how you attack Ward in this defense - tons of crossers and in-breaking routes across the field.

Ambry Thomas is not a starter in this league, they distrust him so much he has to play with a huge cushion every time.
Lenoir is similar, but at least Lenoir can tackle and sometimes he knows he can undercut a route.

Oliver is cool for his pseudo-SAM nickel role but he isn't really a coverage guy.

Whenever the dline cant get immediate pressure with four, the corners look like food.

Right now its a very turnover-reliant secondary that just tries to prevent the big play and maybe force a mistake or two when the opposing offense is methodically driving.

DB's have been a low priority as Iong as Kyle's been coach. I think. They depend on an elite DLine to cover up defensive back weakness. I hope the hiring of Wilks and the high drafting of some CB's Ja'aire and Luter - signals a change in philosophy finally.

everyone STOP asking for another DB before DJ comes out of retirement again !!!

It's pretty shocking even for myself, but I wouldn't be against it at this point. But they likely wouldn't want to spend a PS spot for Dontae.

Um, Akhello and Ambry Thomas were drafted in the third round

Brown is a safety and was drafted in third, Luter was drafted in the fifth (same round as Lenoir)

I really don't see any higher drafting of CBs in any way.

Nah they weren't good today well for the most part they weren't. I didn't like it when Lenoir and Ambry kept playing like 10 yards off cause they were scared of getting toasted. And when they did the receivers would just run a slant which Stafford kept passing to over and over, got damn that was frustrating. But with Thomas injured, they definitely need to add another CB/DB now.
What was Ambry's injury? How severe is it?
Man Ambry and Lenior were bad. And Ward wasn't much better

Yeah they all were bad
Why were they always 10 yards off the receiver? Were they told only to play a soft zone? It is hard for the pressure to get there when you give them 10 yard gimmie passes! They were giving Puka ten yard gimmie passes all game.

He is not good anyway.

Ward tried to play man once and immediately got a penalty. I don't think any of them can play man. We should at least disguise it though and shift and back off pre snap. That's all on wilks though

Exactly this! We are missing Jimmie Ward for sure, but the defensive play calls by Wilks overall throughout that game were terrible. He really didn't make adjustments. If you play a soft zone coverage, Stafford will throw the ball within 2 seconds to guys running curl routes and just sitting down in those zones. Really stupid that he continued to do that. You need to challenge them at the line and make them beat you. Keep two safeties up top, press the receivers, and at least allow the Dline a chance to get to the QB. If you press receivers you can disrupt the timing and allow more time for our great Dline to get there. D line had no chance because of the awful play calling by Wilks!

The only thing Wilks did different in the second half he blitzed Oliver, Warner, and Ward. Ward missed a sack. Oliver is a good DB blitzer. He gets there and is a sure tackler. Warner was a stud as usual. I would like to see our guys jam their receivers and disrupt their routes at least a little bit. Don't just let them run free for 10 yards for easy catches!

Wilks definitely made adjustments at half time that worked. The second half was a completely different game; 6 points given up and 3 of those were as the clock expired. I think Stafford had 4 incompletions at half and ended the game with 21. The secondary didn't play great overall, but the first half was mostly due to scheme, and that's on Wilks. The Rams were content with dinking and dunking, and it was extremely effective at first because the pass rush doesn't have enough time to get there when you're throwing 5 yard passes and getting 3 YAC every play.

First half Stafford looked unstoppable, but he ended up with pretty pedestrian numbers other than the total yards. 61.8% completion and 5.6 yards per attempt. He was at 80%+ completion and around 10 yards per attempt at the half.

When our DLine gets stymied - this is what happens.

Wilks made excellent half-time adjustments. IMO, he should have done it sooner.

And it may be overlooked by some BUT the Rams are much better than last season and have drafted very well.

They beat Seattle last week and many pundits think Seattle will beat us to take the division. I certainly don't.

IF we can pick up a quality DB somewhere - it certainly wouldn't hurt.
