Serious question. Is Fred approaching Patrick Willis status as a 49ers LB.
Hes still below Pat.
approaching for sure though he is maybe one of the best coverage LB in NFL history has to be up there. He isn't as strong as willis so his tackling and run defense isn't as good but both have great instincts and cerebral
He might be the best LBer in the NFL and his thread only has 250ish pages at this point.....
He is under appreciated for sure......
This question is probably gonna bother most 49er fans....but in truth the answer should be........ maybe.....
I think Ritz is 100% correct on why too
Warner is very good in coverage. He is probably the best coverage LB the 49ers have had...at least in my opinion....
In the last 2 years we seen several Tampa 2-ish defenses were Warner locks down the middle of the field and makes plays. That is rare as hell.
3 years ago had you asked me who is the best coverage LB the 49ers have had I would have said Lee Woodall with zero doubt, now I would say Fred Warner with zero doubt. So he has that plus all the other things he does at a high level.
Willis played in that 3-4 so it is very different then what Warner plays in, but I think the edge clearly goes to Willis for his plays in the backfield.
As a refresher (I needed one), in 112 games Willis had 60 tackles for loss, 20 sacks and 41 QB hits. That is a remarkable level of impact. Warner has 80ish games played and has about half the tackles for loss, sacks and QB hits.
Warner is awesome, let's not knock the guy...but Willis was a monster on top of his impact plays.... his tackle total crushes Fred. Dude had 900+ tackles in 112 games.
