I'm trying to think I've ever read that from a Tc report and I can't so you might be right. In college he played lots of zone as a curl/flat defender in Quarters so he has reps in zone. When the 49ers blitz from nickel it's lots of man coverage and they like to blitz Foster, so Warner could be asked to man up in blitz situations.

Right now I'm playing MIKE linebacker, which is a completely new position to me. It's a 180 from what I did in college. At BYU, I was out in space, playing an outside linebacker role that was almost like a nickel. Now I'm playing MIKE, where not only am I having to make different reads from behind the line of scrimmage - reading guards, fullbacks and running backs - but also take command of the defense and make all the calls. I feel like it's a natural position for me, though. I've been able to feel it out pretty well. I'm getting comfortable with my job but also everyone else's role on the defense. I love it so far. I think it's exactly where I'm supposed to be.

Hearing Warner had another great day. Put a big hit on someone.
Rookie LB Fred Warner also was around the ball a lot, including one running play where he read the play, filled quickly and delivered a good thud on RB Jeff Wilson Jr. Warner known for his athleticism and intelligence but perhaps a bit more physical than given credit for.

With all the uncertainty surrounding Foster, I wanted Roquan Smith in the first round and was bummed when we missed out. It looks like we may have found a pretty darn nice consolation prize. I'm guessing team thinks of him as the MIKE of the future, with Foster as the WILL? Sounds delicious. The guy is confident in his abilities. He keeps doing his thing, he'll leapfrog Coyle quickly and start Week 1.
