Greg Papa - 49ers' play-by-play caller

My personal opinion is that Papa is the best football play by play announcer since Bill King, who was simply incredible. Papa is so knowledgeable that he is a teacher of the game as he describes the action. My one criticism is that he occasionally gets so involved in the intricacies of the play that he sometimes forgets to say where the team is one the field (in other words, forgets to say what yard line the play ended).
That stated, have any of you Zoners listened to Brent Musburger? My goodness, that guy is just awful. Ted Robinson is a pro and was quite good (as was Starkey) but Papa is on another level as far as knowledge of the game and play description.
Be happy Niner fans....you probably have one of the best (if not, the best) football radio announcers in the league.

Cheers!

The call Papa picked is a nod to the "Touchdown Kan-sas City" call that the Chiefs long term announcer enunciates. I'm cool with the new call and I've been listening to the Niners' announcers since Lon Simmons was the main guy. It is different and will take some getting used to but Papa puts a lot of energy into it and that is ultimately, the point.

I have to be honest, I just listed to the touchdown plays from yesterday and Papa is 9361471715712641987 times better than Robinson. Whether you like the actual touchdown call of "Touchdoooooooooowwwwwwnnnnnn San - Fran - Cisco!" or not, it's the call of the entire moment itself that sets him apart from Ted Blah-binson. No disrespect to Ted, but I just felt so badly wanting to feel the emotion of the moment from him and just not getting it 99% of the time. He was so underwhelming to me.

If you listen to more than just the TD call, you can truly appreciate how much better Papa is. His flow and great SUDDENNESS in changing to CAPTURE that excitement factor is, as it should be, on level with MY excitement for the play and that's a special trait.

This is just an example, not the actual call word for word, but I love calls like this:

"Trips right Garoppolo out of the shotgun, looks lef-GOODWIN-WIDE-OPEN-HE'SGOINGALLTHEWAY!!!!! TOUUCHDOWWNWNWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!.."

Ted: "Jimmy takes the snap, throws downfield to a wide open Marquise Goodwin! Goodwin is Gone! Touchdown Niners!" ... Zzzzzzzzzzz
f**k yeah. I've already warmed up to the call. Keep bringing that energy, Papa!!

I hate that TD call. Already had a feeling he was going to try hard to do something over the top...and he did.

I go back to Lon Simmons, too. He was great ("Roaring Back" years), and then Don Klein & Wayne Walker, Starkey, etc. Wasn't a big Ted Robinson fan. Now, it's Papa and I really like his energy and football knowledge.

Joe Starkeys and Lon Simmonses don't grow on trees, people. Greg is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic announcer. I think it would be difficult for even the detractors to say that Robinson was in the same league when it came to calling football games.

I'm thankful we have him.
what was wrong with Robinson?
Ted Robinson, nice guy, enjoy when he calls PAC-12 games on TV, but as NFL radio PBP he is nowhere near Greg Papa. As someone said above, Papa's knowledge of the game is quite impressive, and I mean down to intricacies of different defenses and OL schemes.

I hear a lot of other teams' radio calls on Sirius and from the ones I've heard, there's only a couple in the same ballpark as Papa. One of the few occasions where York made a great move.

Not so much anything wrong with him, but just the fact Papa is head & shoulders better and was available.
