I always thought that was his style, his schtick. Like when he announced for the Raiders: Touchdown, Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyders!!!
I like Papa as an announcer, but I didn't like the Raaaayyyyders TD call when he did that.

I like Papa too but not as an announcer. I've listened to him for years and its clear he knows the game, but his Touchdoooo*voice crack*wnnnn San-Fran-Cisco call is awful. Sorry.

It's "SAN-FRRAN-SISSSS-KEWWWWWWWW"

That. Awful.

Why does he feel the need to say it that way? It's so annoying. Otherwise he's pretty good as an announcer

Trying to differentiate from "Touchdown 49ers!" Which was infinitely better.

That was Joe Starkey

Yeah, I'm okay with Greg and Ted Robinson, but I miss Starkey as well. Lon Simmons was also a great announcer for the Niners. There's just something nostalgic about Joe and Lon.
Papa been going off the rails lately, talking s**t about us, saying Purdy has small hands (same size as Mahomes, not actually small) etc. I think he's great on play by play and love the TD call, but as a personality he pushes the edge of douche a little too often for me.

You guys listen to the 49ers on the radio? I've tried that and the delay on the television means the radio acts as a spoiler to what is about to be shown on TV.

You may want to check this guy out. He takes the weekly 49er highlights videos on YouTube and replaces the network voices with Greg Papa's KNBR calls. He times them up perfectly too. He does really good work.

But this is highlights. I'm talking about live.

he got it from a past 49er announcer.. forgot who did that.

IIRC, when he first took over in 2019, the first preseason game was against the Chiefs, and he said right before debuting it that he adapted it from one of their radio announcers TD calls: "TOUCHDOWWWWWWWN!!!! KAN-SAS CIT-TYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!"

…which is even WORSE.
Not trying to bash Papa - just an observation I find annoying.

Was on the road last night and couldn't watch but instead had to listen to the game, unfortunately (will watch the recording today). Papa when doing play-by-play mentions an involved player's name - the guy making the tackle, catching a pass, running the ball, etc. - and instead of mentioning right away how many yards were gained or lost, he quickly gives info on that player, such as what teams he played for previously, what school he went to, and other factoids. I'm almost screaming at the radio asking for the yardage gained, not the details about the player's background!

It makes it difficult to listen to him at times. Gotta mention things in close to real time on the radio, like the yardage gained/lost, time on the clock when winding down, etc., instead of focusing so much on a player's background while the play is still going or just finished.

I always listen to play by play on the radio. I connect my receiver to the radio call on 'I Heart Radio' app on IPhone. There's about a 9 second difference, the TV is ahead. Pause the tv for 9 seconds and they are in sync. 100% better experience listening to Tim Ryan and Greg Papa instead of lame TV announcers.
