We also lost 5 games in a row at the begging by 3 points or less (13 points total). You can try to say we were closer to a 2-14 team and others can say we were closer to a 10-6 team. In reality we were a 6-10 team, which had 11 games where we had a chance to win and only pulled out 6 wins. I say the record perfectly defines the type of team they were last year.

This needed a whole thread? I don't think anybody seriously believes us to be a contender. Were a maybe wild card this year at best and we should be thankful for that much improvement this fast. The team was a disaster when these guys took over. 2 years in we are shooting for respectable...not championships.

I have been saying 8-8, but in the PYMWYMI thread I actually ended up a little higher going game by game. I can see the potential to be just a little better than that with some luck and good bounces. OF course a couple of injuries and losing a close one here and there and 7-9 is very likely too.

Anything between 7-9 and 9-7 seems like the sweet spot. I think we are a year away from true contention as well. Debatable: accurate take, or me trying to expect less so end up pleasantly surprised? Also: good things happen after 6-10 seasons with this franchise.

It doesn't take much imagination to see the 49ers as 'contenders' this year.

• Seriously doubt we will have more injuries this year then last.
• We added clear upgrades to multiple positions. [QB, C, RT-run blocking, CB]
• We fielded the youngest team in the league last year and ALL of them are now older and presumably wiser.

Adding 2 wins to our total [8-8] should be a 'slam dunk' and adding 4 wins [10-6] is well within the realm of possible. If we should happen to add a quality ER via free agency...even better!

Why so much negativity?

Not sure why you think we won't have more injuries this year than last. They happen every year and we are just as likely to have a serious one this year as last. We now have a franchise type QB which we didn't have most of last year. If he gets injured that is a bigger deal than all of last years injuries combined. I hope this doesn't happen but I always expect someone to go down. It's just part of the game.

We did upgrade at some key positions (mostly on offense) but we still need to get pressure on the QB. It seems like every time we do pressure him he dumps the ball off to someone who is wide open . Not sure if this is because of the scheme we run or just young players missing assignments.

I still see 8-8 or possibly 9-7. Anything more than that and I'll ecstatic.
