I meant to do this yesterday morning.

Blooper or highlight?
Lets put it to the test.

Press play.
S Thomas actually blocks coyle on that play. When coyle was hitting the RB, Thomas takes coyles legs out.

This is the pick 6. Same 12-15 yard Out from Pettis. This time, instead of Garcon, it's Bourne at #1.

Unblocked rusher so Jimmy has to throw.

Ball location suggests he expected Bourne to break inside, not curl his route. Maybe this route combo should have been ran similar to the Pettis catch and run.

Which RB is this in pass protection? Why did he run away from the blitz on his side?

prob a quick slant, that's where Jimmy put the ball, he should have also told the RB to pass protect, he was clearly trying to leak out in a pattern and runs into the G, lol

The Vikes fake blitz up the middle. Drew the RB's attention. But it's actually a corner blitz. RB didn't see it

What's nice is, it didn't look like it matters. Jimmy still got the ball out with his quick release and accuracy. He just threw it to the wrong guy

Bourne admitted he ran it wrong

That was a clever blitz, fake 7 bring 6, that left inside backer sucked in the RB, the corner was the free rusher and Bourne was supposed to pick that up as the 'alert', the young receiver screwed up and it ended up costing us a pick 6

Goodwin's speed has to be respected, but could Pettis achieve the same impact with an uncanny ability to get open and slip behind a defense?

Good question. I'll go back and look but speed is always the best weapon particularly in concepts like Pin. I have no doubt that Pettis can effectively run that route but maybe not getting the same stretch on the Safety as someone with Goodwin's speed would.

Side note: it's so nice having some team speed on both sides of the ball, that was one of my biggest gripes with the Harbaugh years (and years that shall not be named).

Edit: Didn't see any Pin concepts

Too lazy to find the 101 of X and O thread, therefore I will put it here.

The LB who is assigned to the RB (aka #2 of the weakside): Is he in a real man coverage on the RB, i.e. does he have to stay with the RB any time? Cannot imagine that the LB has to run down/to the near side just because the RB does it.
According to another page, the receivers are counted pre-snap AND post-snap. Therefore the number can change. Is this right?
Bourne seemed to be lined up too close to the sidelines for that to have been an out.

That LB on the weakside will match the RB unless the RB crosses the center line to release to the opposite side. So in that picture, postsnap, if the RB crosses the face of the QB to run to the right side of the offensive formation, that weakside LB no longer has the RB in man coverage and will look for any crossers to match, or drop to curl/flat.

Yes, the WRs are counted presnap and postsnap when applying the rules for pattern matching. When WRs criss-cross near the line of scrimmage, their number designations change accordingly. This is to prevent pick plays while continuing to apply pattern match concepts.

That was Morris. He was probably fooled by MIN into thinking pressure was going to come from his left.

for sure, looks like it was BoB protection and it looks like the OL were counting left to right, leaving the right inside backer as the one assigned to the RB, so two pass pro failed assignments on this play one by Morris and the other by Bourne

Pettis needs to understand his role in the concept better. There were times he wasted some steps working against a press to shake free. He has to understand he's not playing against his man, per se, but the defensive coverage. His biggest job is gaining depth to force the deep safety to respect it. Even if it means we take a shot and don't hit it, if he shows that threat it changes the whole defense.

We're going to run one of our staples, the PIN concept. The PIN is a combo of a Post+DIG or deep in. Garcon runs the deep in and Pettis is running the post. We're going to jazz up some read-option run action to give Jimmy more time and try and pull the safety out wider. This is a great design against a cover 2. Cover 2 is weak down the middle of the field so this is a great play call and pretty good execution. We're going to run Taylor on a wheel vertical to widen the boundary safety even more. Minn is in cover-2 man.

Here's the run action that is trying to widen the safety Harrison Smith.

SMith doesn't bite at all and looks so shade inside. Compare his drop with the other safety who's even wider on the more shallow part of the field.

As he's helping on Pettis he peeks inside and see's Garcon coming on his DIG route.

Smith is the player Jimmy is reading. He bites just for a second on Garcon's route and it allows Pettis behind him.

Pettis is now behind the defense and Jimmy launches a pass.

That's as good a pass as you can throw and the defender just made an incredible play. How many times have we seen our team give up TD's on throws less accurate than this over the past 4 years. You tip your cap to that defender and move on.

I tried to include the GIF of the play but the sequence was just too long. My filesharing site I use says the GIF file was too large...Sorry guys.

Side note - this is the drive that ended in the Morris fumble....
Here's the play above:

------------------
This is the Kittle catch and run off a similar concept, but with Goodwin running the Post (he re-entered the game for a bit), he draws the safety (even with a bad leg), which opens up Kittle's deep cross.

lol Kittle should keep running but this is after his drop off the finger tips on the long bomb. He probably wants to make sure he secures this pass so he stops running in the middle of the field.

816 we spoke about this. Yankee and Pin seems to be used interchangeably but I feel as though Pin has a sharp Square In (Dig route) whereas Yankee looks to get the deep crosser to cross the middle of the field sooner so that the crosser gets to the far side of the field. That's why Yankee has a bent deep cross instead of a sharp square in.
So the play jonnyd cut up is Pin (Garcon runs a Dig). Kittle's catch is Yankee. Thoughts, guys?
