Goodwin's speed has to be respected, but could Pettis achieve the same impact with an uncanny ability to get open and slip behind a defense?

Speed. DB's respect Goodwin's speed because they have too. He's proven to be a deep threat and DB's need to back off the line because of it.

Pettis is a rookie and would need earn that same respect from DB's by beating DB's deep early and often.

We're going to run one of our staples, the PIN concept. The PIN is a combo of a Post DIG or deep in. Garcon runs the deep in and Pettis is running the post. We're going to jazz up some read-option run action to give Jimmy more time and try and pull the safety out wider. This is a great design against a cover 2. Cover 2 is weak down the middle of the field so this is a great play call and pretty good execution. We're going to run Taylor on a wheel vertical to widen the boundary safety even more. Minn is in cover-2 man.

Here's the run action that is trying to widen the safety Harrison Smith.

SMith doesn't bite at all and looks so shade inside. Compare his drop with the other safety who's even wider on the more shallow part of the field.

As he's helping on Pettis he peeks inside and see's Garcon coming on his DIG route.

Smith is the player Jimmy is reading. He bites just for a second on Garcon's route and it allows Pettis behind him.

Pettis is now behind the defense and Jimmy launches a pass.

That's as good a pass as you can throw and the defender just made an incredible play. How many times have we seen our team give up TD's on throws less accurate than this over the past 4 years. You tip your cap to that defender and move on.

I tried to include the GIF of the play but the sequence was just too long. My filesharing site I use says the GIF file was too large...Sorry guys.

Side note - this is the drive that ended in the Morris fumble....
Here's the play above:

------------------
This is the Kittle catch and run off a similar concept, but with Goodwin running the Post (he re-entered the game for a bit), he draws the safety (even with a bad leg), which opens up Kittle's deep cross. vs Cover3

lol Kittle should keep running but this is after his drop off the finger tips on the long bomb. He probably wants to make sure he secures this pass so he stops running in the middle of the field.

816 we spoke about this. Yankee and Pin seems to be used interchangeably but I feel as though Pin has a sharp Square In (Dig route) whereas Yankee looks to get the deep crosser to cross the middle of the field sooner so that the crosser gets to the far side of the field. That's why Yankee has a bent deep cross instead of a sharp square in.
So the play jonnyd cut up is Pin (Garcon runs a Dig). Kittle's catch is Yankee. Thoughts, guys?

Yankee
Sorry, just a repost to new page. Yes NC, the two plays here support what you said. Goodwin's speed demands respect.

I missed this earlier. I'm gonna agree with that about the PIN and Yankee being different for the exact reasons you mentioned. I still think the Yankee has its roots with the old speedo branch of plays.

This is From the 1994 Niners pass install playbook. All the stuff you see with the Yankee play is here. Post-deep crosser and playaction. I used to have a bunch of gifs of Jerry running this play.
4 turnovers, including a goal line fumble and a pick 6, injuries galore, playing one of the toughest teams on the road, and we only lose by 8. I'm actually encouraged by that. I think the team will stomp Detroit on Sunday.

Pettis needs to understand his role in the concept better. There were times he wasted some steps working against a press to shake free. He has to understand he's not playing against his man, per se, but the defensive coverage. His biggest job is gaining depth to force the deep safety to respect it. Even if it means we take a shot and don't hit it, if he shows that threat it changes the whole defense.

So more of an issue of experience versus ability. Although Goodwin has incredible speed, Pettis has the ability to work on achieving what Goodwin does with raw athletic ability with more a refined technique. If I've misuderstood, please let me know.

This is what I was thinking - if JG can hit a couple of deep passes and Pettis can become accustomed to catching balls on those routes, you're right it will demand respect.

And I don't think he has to have Goodwin speed (who does?) either, to start commanding that respect. He just needs to keep doing what he's doing and we need to hit on some of those deeper routes and start getting the DB's and DC to take notice and adjust.

I liked Pettis's route on Bourne's TD. He really busts it inside almost mimicing a drag release....he then takes it upfield before getting to the corner. It's a nice way to create seperation and set up a coner-flat. It made Bourne's TD look real easy.

What's up with all the bear fronts DET was coming with? Why do that against a team that likes to run outside zone?

Not sure. I feel like Patricia was more worried about the cut-back inside than the outside run. It bit them when Breida gashed em for 20 one play and 66 the next.

Exactly the sequence I was referring to. Also the first play of the game when Breida went for 28. Although that wasn't outside zone. Did Patricia think he was playing Harbaugh's 9ers? I don't think I've seen a team do that against the Kyle 49ers between the 20s.
Hello all you amazing niner Faithful!

Glad to be back for another week of football goodies, breakdowns and discussion of our favorite football team. Lots of stuff to talk about this week and I'm hoping I'll have the time this week to get to everything I'd like to show.

First, let's talk about Jimmy "The QB that we all want to talk about" Garappolo.

I mentioned it in the Jimmy thread, but last year myself and Thl got asked a number of times, "man, how do you even beat this guy and Shanny?" Our answer then, "You play sticky man-coverage and keep him in the pocket". That was Detroits main gameplan this week and it worked to their advantage(somewhat, considering they still gave up 30 points) and they're going to be one of the better man-coverage teams in the league considering that's their bread and butter. These last two teams, plus the Rams are going to present the toughest challenge to our passing game this season, IMO. They've matched up the best against what we do and with the losses of both McKinnon and Goodwin.

One thing you have to realize, McK and Goodwin were going to be our 2 best man-coverage beaters with T. Taylor as our 3rd. When you can have a guy like McK in the backfield and run those rub routes with Goodwin and a big body of Garcon or Kittle, that's a matchup nightmare. However, we can't have nice things around here.

Detroit had to run a lot of man-coverage and did a pretty good job of it most of the time. It resulted in 5 coverage sacks. However, even with those problems we still managed to score 3 TD's and 3 FG's. That's not a bad days work putting up 30 points. That's going to win a lot of games. Jimmy may have not looked perfect but when you are 18-26, 2 TD's, no turnovers and score 30 points on offense, that's pretty good. One thing was clear. Of the 2 QB's that took the field on Sunday, Jimmy was clearly the better QB.

Defense- It will be really nice to have Foster back this week and hopefully M. Smith in reserve. E. Lee played admirably for a guy who is a 4th string LBer(remember that....4th string). Just think of how confident we'd have felt going against some teams the past few years knowing their 1st, 2nd and 3rd LBers were out of the game. Foster will be a huge boost to this defense. They have a lot of good things in place and are getting better. I wouldn't be surprised if we have a top 5 rushing defense next season when we have all our troops, another off-season of building and a year under Warner's belt. This team has a lot of good things going for it in that area which is really nice considering just 20 months ago we were coming off a historically bad run defense year.

Sherman - Man..... there was not a player in the NFL that I couldn't stand more than Sherman the past 6 years. That being said, it sure is nice to have a player like him in this defense. He really only gave up a couple throws all game and I think I counted it for a combined 8 yards. That's a pretty darn good day. It got to one point where there were a couple guys open but Stafford wasn't even looking at Sherm's side.....not at all..... If Spoon can keep his head on straight and keep honing his craft this has a chance to be a special defense.

Saleh - I'm trying to give him a chance but some of these calls blow my mind. When we're trying to shut the door on the Lions comeback he overthinks himself and plays a cover - 6 and DET burns us for an easy TD. He also had some head scratching zone blitzes that cost us in this game. Another TD came off those. I really am trying to stick up for this guy but it's gonna get harder if he continues to call some games like this. There were 2 TD's in that game that were purely the result of bad defensive calls.

Run game - Breida sure does look nice. He's got some good wiggle and is the guy Shanny hoped Williams would be. I don't count the Williams miss against Shanny because he hit a home-run with Breida and it all came out in the wash. This kid fits really well in this system. He's decisive in this one-cut system and runs hard through arm tackles. Then, in the open field he's got that little wiggle that allows him to make some guys miss without completely breaking down. What a gem.

Anyhoo, I think that's all I'm going to talk about in the OP so we'll star throwing some breakdowns up over the next few days. Cheers y'all and glad we got a win before November!!!!

The Lions do have some good speed at the edge and it may have been to help the LBers in coverage. Cover up that inside so they can always follow their man to the point of attack and if it's not a run, they're still there.
