Coaches Film Analysis: 2018 Season

The 49ers have been seeing Cover1 Robber a lot as opposing defenses man up and put a robber in the middle take away those in breaking routes over the short/intermediate middle of the field that the 49ers love to throw. This was a nice play design to beat Cover1 Robber.
Blue is the robber. Yellow and red looks to horizontally stretch the robber.
As the play develops, Red also looks to take the middle deep safety so that Orange can work the deep middle.
The progression is yellow - red - orange.


Jimmy drops back and looks to Breida on the angle route. If the robber shades towards Breida, then he is moving away from red.


The blue robber inches over towards Breida to defeat Breida's route.


The red deep safety stays in the middle of the field and would defeat Taylor's route, but that would free up space for Garcon provided Garcon wins on his route to get separation. Garcon is seen stemming outside so that he can work back inside. But all that goes out the window as Staley is beaten inside and pressure appears in Jimmy's face.


As Jimmy rolls left to evade, Breida takes a peak towards the endzone to see that there is no one between himself and the sideline. This means Breida can run hard towards the sideline.

Kyle sets his up much better though. Roman's seemed to come out of nowhere.

I don't think Breida had any intention of cutting inside and possibly getting tackled. I think he was trying to get as much as he can before going out of bound to save time on the clock.

The pain still hurts from losing Jimmy, the main reason I was excited to watch the coaches tape after this season's games. I didn't watch every play like I usually do, so I have no game summary. jonnyd is still MIA probably sobbing in the corner somewhere.
Normally, I'd show the impactful plays that contributed to the outcome on the game, whether it was good or bad from the 49ers point of view, but instead I'll just cut up what I thought were the top five 49er highlights from the game in hopes of cheering us (me) up. If anyone would like to see a particular play, let me know and I'll show it.

This is the Exum pick 6. It comes on the same coverage call as the Dontae Johnson pick6 from 2017 against JAC - Cover 1 Robber. The 49ers like to rob the weakside Hook zone when playing Cover1. This allows the safety (blue robber) rotating down to see all crossing routes coming from the strongside.
LAC are running what starts off looking like a Mesh concept, which would work against man coverage.


At the snap, Exum steps forward to rotate down to the weakside Hook - this is not what a Cover2 safety would do (step forward at the snap). The 49ers also rarely play Cover2 Man and wouldn't on a 1st down early in the game.


At this point in the play, it looks like KAllen (13) and the TE will run a Mesh, a common combo to beat man coverage.


But KAllen (13) pivots his route and breaks back towards the outside. Had he continued across the field, there may have been a slight pick with the TE on Spoon to create some separation. But I guess this is how the play is drawn up for LAC. With Exum patrolling the weakside Hook, he is abl eto defend both the TE's route, and KAllen's route.


Rivers is known for his funky sidearm release - so his release point is lower than a typical QB. That sidearm release, combined with DeFo obstructing the passing lane, forces Rivers to release the pass with a high trajectory, in order to throw it over DeFo. This causes an overthrow.


Great way to start the game.

I initially thought so too but he slammed the ball as he was going OB as if he knew it. He was right to initially get yards and get OB but...

I call this the Matrix play because the 49ers dodged a number of bullets here.
This is a pick-a-side play. I think to the right is a Tampa2 beater where purple removes the Mike for orange. To the left is a Cover3 beater, a similar variation of a Slant-Flat concept, it just happens further downfield.

At the snap, Juice start to run to the flat, then realizes that the SS (DJames) is blitzing. James will be unblocked. Blue are the deep zones. It's A Cover 3 shell so BeatHard looks to his left.


BeatHard has started his windup in this pic to target Kittle. Great anticipation as Kittle has yet to clear the curl/flat defender (the defender directly next to Kittle in this pic). The blue defender is the deep 1/3. Because Kittle aligned tight to the formation, this deep 1/3 defender will play Kittle with outside leverage. This allows Kittle's inward breaking route to win.




BeatHard crunched by an unblocked rusher. Staley gets his leg rolled up and is injured, but thankfully not severely. The FS comes in low on Kittle and luckily Kittle's leg isn't planted in the grass or else a major knee injury is a possibility. Three bullets dodged on one play. First down converted.

This is the 49ers second longest play from scrimmage of the day.
Z Cross (three level flood) vs Cover 3


Underneath zones highlighted. LAC play Cover3 very similar to the 49ers (their DC is from SEA's coaching tree). The Hook defender will look to match any intermediate crossing routes in order to help defend against these Flood combos.
Here, the yellow Hook defender sees Garcon coming and knows that he has to match Garcon, but he gets too flat footed here and will have to now quickly turn and run to stay with Garcon. This is not a good position for that Hook defender.

Kittle is becoming a playmaker in this offense. Now that he's put this long catch and run on tape, I'd expect defenses to start paying more attention to him.

This play is designed to widen the seams in Cover3 and horizontally stretch the middle 1/3 deep safety (blue). The 49ers align Bourne and Garcon with plus splits, wide, outside of the numbers. This is to horizontally stretch the field. The deep safety chooses to align straight on with the Center. Often times, the FS when facing this alignment will shade towards the wide side of the field (towards Garcon) because there's more area to cover on that side.


As BeatHard drops back he looks at the FS (blue), on his last step (moment below), he looks to his left. This is to pull that FS over towards Bourne, and away from Kittle.


Kittle fakes an outward breaking route. The key is to turn the head as if he's really breaking outwards. This helps keep the red defender in place. Otherwise, red would start to split the difference between Garcon and Kittle as red attempts to play #2 (Kittle) and #1 (Garcon). In this pic, red sees Kittle coming at him, so red will not shade towards the middle of the field.


The deep FS is moved by BeatHard's eyes. The defender over Garcon stays over Garcon. This creates a gigantic seam between the two deep 1/3 defenders (FS and defender over Garcon). Kittle with a stick-nod route attacks the seam.
