On this GB TD, Kyle Shanahan just explained "one guy lined up on the wrong side." I'm guessing it was Jimmie Ward, who's sprinting across the formation at the snap. Shanahan did confirm that he'd have liked one of the 49ers defenders to call timeout, but Rodgers snapped quickly https://t.co/7IxMprOTpc

Here's the first GB play from scrimmage. Last week the 49ers gave up a 70 yard bomb for a TD on ARI's first play. At least this one wasn't a TD. Proof of improvement from the defense.
I think this is Cover3 but with trips to the field side, Colbert shades over to the passing strength of the formation.
vs Switch Verticals. We've seen this before, too many times.
WR number designations will change, colors will not.
This is what I think the coverage is, but playaction and the trips formation skews things. (orange are underneath defenders, blue is deep zones)
This route combo is designed to horizontally stretch Ward's deep zone. At the snap, Ward starts to bail. He needs to read the #2 release while also keeping an eye on #1. In this pic, #2 is coming underneath #1 and Ward must be mindful of that. #3 is serving as bait for KWilliams so that KW does not match #2. Nice play design.
#1 and #2 have switched, hence the name Switch Verticals. There must be in play communication between Ward and Colbert. The way I've seen teams defend this is Ward passes the new #2 to Colbert, peels off and takes the new #1. That doesn't happen here as Ward follows the new #2, leaving #1 wide open.
+60. One of the benefits of playing the same coverage over and over, like the 49ers play Cover3, is that offenses dial up the same concepts over and over. They should start being easier to recognize and defend. It's about time Ward understands what offenses are doing to him. I'll show the 50+ yarder by JGraham where Ward, again, cannot recognize how teams are attacking him.

Actually, my comment about Ward applies to GB's first play too.
He seems to take the first guy in his zone and follow him no matter where he goes. Teams have been running plays where the first WR sprints through the zone and a second, later WR, comes in wide open.

on that GB first play I labeled Ward as #25. That's obviously wrong.

thl, why didn't they match that first play?
Williams carries 2, Warner pushes.

Here's the other huge chunk play. Defending the deep crosser from the strongside #3 is always a challenge for Cover3 coverage. It requires being alert and finding any threat into your deep zone. Blue are deep zones, orange is underneath. Ward is lined up over the #1 on his side, a TE.
Playaction and the #1 on Ward's side doesn't go out for a route. Ward thinks his job is done.
Put your head on a swivel and find work. Are there any threats coming into your area? Find it and stop covering grass.
Argh! +54
----------------------
Not quite the same route combo, but still applies (Cover3).
The #1 on Sherman's side runs shallow, he's no longer Sherman's responsibility. Sherman gets his head on a swivel and finds work. Oh look, a crosser from the strongside #3. Matched.
#1 runs shallow, but Sherman continues to gain depth and find a threat. Don't have to be multiple all pro to do this. This is basic understanding of the defense being played and knowing how offenses like to attack it.

My guess is Warner was pulled over by the playfake so KWilliams felt he had to stay there and cover the #3. But it doesn't look like KWilliams had any urge to match/carry #2. He watched the playfake then went to cover #3. Never looked at #2.

He's a frickin burnt potato man. Every damn game he brainfarts as a deep sideline 1/3 defender.

He was awful on that play, Malcolm Smith didn't cover himself in glory either, bit far too hard on the play fake then didn't get anywhere near deep enough in his drop.

Nice play here on the opening drive to help net the TD.
This is a vertical stretch on the red Middle (hook) defender. Juice lined up wide with a CB over him reveals zone coverage.
Sucker vs Fire zone blitz (blues are deep zones)
Goodwin draws the red Hook defender for Bourne to attack behind. For added room, Kittle's curl holds the weakside SCF defender. Nice protection picks up the blitzer to give Beathard a good pocket.

Now call me crazy, but it looked like there was only 6 seconds left on the play clock?

Mike Pettine and Kyle have a history together from their CLE days that did not end well. Here, Pettine dials up a pretty exotic blitz and gets burned.
GB is going to initially send 6 man pressure and play a Tampa2 shell behind it.
Both CBs blitz.
A DE peels off and drops into coverage. This is getting fancy.
Garcon holds the field side Cover2 safety. A LB is assigned to cover the "pipe", area between the two safeties. But that LB can't gain depth fast enough to offer adequate inside help for the boundary safety.
Goodwin's speed is too much for a LB.
