Double Slants vs Cover 1 Robber
MIN shows presnap pressure, but will back off at the snap.

Versus man coverage, try to hit the slant. Kyle has mentioned this, but MIN puts a robber in the middle (Kendricks) to give inside help.

Muddling the middle of the field was a common theme in this game for MIN's defense. Jimmy mistakenly tries to hit the inside slant and is fortunate it's just an incompletion.

Sidenote, check out Goodwin vs XRhodes on the backside. When MIN starts taking away the middle, an outside threat helps. When Goodwin left the game, that hurt.

This cutup really shows what I felt JG was doing all day, and that was trying to lock on to a receiver and force the ball instead of working his progressions and letting the game come to him... this combo is progressed inside out, it's a bang bang type of play, there is no key defender to read,it's a slant-flat variant out of doubles, #1 and #2 are shutdown with the slants and #3 in the flat is the open progression, if he hits him on his out break with a good ball on the outside hand he could have turned it upfield for a nice gain... he is supposed to read #1 on his first reach step of the drop (3 step), when his back foot hits the ground on the second reach step (the 3rd step) he decides on #2, if closed he is supposed to load on the step #3 and deliver the ball to the flat...

So, one thing we did was ran an "over" front. Here's a decent whiteboard of what an "over" front looks like:

Think of "Emmons" as our SAM and Strahan as our Solly.

In the "over" you flip it from our normal, "under" set. Your SAM player moves to the weakside as well as your BE. and your LEO is now playing stacked over the TE. This is to protect against counters and some gap power stuff . But, you have to have a stud LEO to pull this off because he's going now be asked to play against double teams or force double teams.

Minn runs an off-tackle run to the strong side against this on 2nd and 4 as they were getting into our territory.

Here, ST is the key. He is taking on the TE and that TE is trying to kick him out. Being an off-tackle run, the RB is going to read the block of the tackle, if the TE can kick out, the T comes up inside and clears the way, if the T has to kick out, he cuts it back inside.

ST does a great job of doing his job. He understands he's got players to the outside so he doesn't try and go around the TE, he holds down the TE on the inside and is also able then, to engage the T as well. This double team he takes on(while not getting moved off his spot BTW) allows both Coyle and Warner to flow and fill their gaps.

With nowhere to go, Cook tries to cut it up inside and Warner did a heck of job flowing with violence and fills the hole to tackle Cook for -2 yards. It's a great play because this should be an automatic 2-3 yards for the offense to set up 3rd and 1 or a first down and now it's 3rd and 6 and leads to an incomplete pass.

I guess for me I don't quite see it that way. When NE beat Seattle in the SB Brady threw this exact route against this exact coverage 3 times in the 3rd quarter alone. The difference was the defender didn't recover as quickly and the receiver was Edelman.

If it was pure C3 zone I could see it that way, but it was C1 press with a robber, changes how the routes are run... just don't see an open window here on #1
this is one thing that makes Shanny so great. He works a gameplan through the game and sets the defense up and is one of the best at the counter-punch. What makes his so great is not that he knows how to counter-punch, but that he comes into the game having already prepared all the counters and has them on hand. This is a great play to counter what Minn does to counter our counter to the counter they did to our staple play.......lol. I explain it this way....

We run outside zone, so they start to aggressively attack the outside zone. So, we run a slide concept(those bootleg passes you see us run) so, Minn attacks the backside with defenders who are now looking for the slide concept(counter to the counter to the counter) So we come back with another counter. But, most teams won't anticipate these many counter punches and would be trying to draw these plays up in the dirt on the sideline. Shanny comes in ready.

This was one of the worst missed opportunities all day. This is hard to swallow because it's a play you've set the defense up for all game long. It's like a boxer setting up another guy for his knockout punch, then missing.

We're going to run PA and then it looks like a slide concept out of that.

Minn attacks the outside zone hard and then Smith and Co. see the slide and attack it aggressively.

CHeck out how hard the defense attacks the slide. You have all those defenders flowing towards that side of the field. Kittle hangs out like he was blocking and then stopped - like the rest of the O-line, then he'll take off down the sideline.

Those who had Kittle on a fantasy team were getting real excited here.....

Son, you close your hands on the ball....not air before the ball gets there.....

For sure, and with an over the shoulder catch elbows need to be in close to the body! I just don't think he is a natural pass catcher
Well, folks, I might have more for you tomorrow. I doubt I'll have much more today. My mom is in town visiting our family and it's the first time I've seen her in 7 years. So, as much as I love y'all and football, family is far more important(that's also why I didn't have this thread up yesterday). Have fun dissecting every nanosecond of the 12 plays or so we have up here, lol.

Thanks for something to chew on!
jonnydel and thl408 made me feel so much better.

I was not worried that Jimmy G would fall off the cliff, but we should pay close attention to his play. There is huge difference between having a QB who is barely a top 10 QB, vs a top 5 QB, vs top 3 QB. We obviously want him to be as good as possible.

Hes a 9er TE. That goes without saying.

Brent Jones says Hi!
I love Kittle.. but maybe, he needs to change that #85... something about #85 and them hands when not facing the ball..

Thanks for the breakdowns. They are great. I'm glad you are having some time with your Mom.

Going back to the first defensive series of the game for the 49ers, this is what I think we can expect to see a lot of this season when the 49ers do not blitz on 3rd down when facing 3x1.
Man coverage ("Mable") on the backside, zone coverage on the frontside (trips). With better CBs this season, compared to Rashard Robinson and Dontae Johnson, this coverage should be more effective this season.

T-E stunt with Buckner and Marsh.

With the Center sliding towards Armstead, Armstead takes one for the team and eats up the Center and RG. Buckner tries to occupy two for Marsh to loop around.

The LG passes Buckner off to the LT so that the LG can take Marsh. But Buckner uses that moment to bust through the gap and pressure Cousins.

Wide splits from the DTs, T-E stunt, Cover3 Mable, all things we will see a lot of throughout the year. Good hold on 3rd down to force a punt before MIN can enter field goal territory.
