⛏ SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS vs DETROIT LIONS 🦁 GAMEDAY THREAD - 2018 Season Week 2

Not just that the OL sucks, but without Goodwin's speed, the OL isn't good enough to allow long developing plays by slower receivers. This may not happen all the time, but when you're getting hit, the clock in your head speeds up more than it should on those plays where people are open.

The thing is, Garoppolo really wasn't getting hit much other than the plays where he just plain held on to the football too long. The pass blocking was giving him enough time to throw, most of the time. There were too many plays where he just stood in the pocket, looking like he went through all his progressions, at that point he needed to throw it away or bail. You stand there long enough, someone is going to hit you.

But dude, it's Eli...just kidding.

The OL does suck....right now.

But I agree, I'm sure thl or JD can highlight it but it 'seemed' like we had a lot more of Breida/Morris, Juice and Kittle staying in for extra pass protection. So JG had way less outlets and was relying on his WR's greatly, to beat coverage. When they didn't, JG was stuck holding the ball too long b/c of the lack of outlets. The Lions were pretty physical with our WR's too.

The OL was good enough to blast open some nice big holes for Breida and Morris. I mean your blocking can't be that awful when you get 190 yards on the ground. The pass blocking wasn't as much of an issue as some claim.

Like I said, I think the film will show that the OL performed better than expected. RG was an issue, but we knew that coming in with all the injuries.

Jets had 170 yards against them as well. They have Mangini-like gap integrity over there. Terrible. But you can only perform against who you play. I was just in the OL thread giving props to Person for playing. Breida feasted on his holes. Tomlinson again, meh, 15 yard penalty. Staley certainly had a better game this week. McGlinchey up and down as expected...same with Richburg. Overall, I'd guess a C- (up from a D last week) b/c of the extra bodies needed to help block and 6 sacks and lots of hits and pressures and not many clean pockets to step up into in rhythm.

Well, what's too long with slower receivers who can't get as much separation? I'm wondering if Goodwin's speed demands a double team which means you have allow other guys more room to work?

Teams are far more willing to go 1 on 1 without safety help over the top against the 49ers other receivers than they are with Goodwin. Few guys in the NFL have that level of homerun speed. Pettis has good speed but he's not in the same ballpark as Goodwin which allows the defense to cheat in their coverage.

If the 49ers have Goodwin and McKinnon out there, defensively Detroit has to approach this game much differently.

I mean you play against whoever your opponent is. Today the OL performed a lot better when it comes to run blocking and better in pass blocking from what I saw. The main issues when it comes to pass blocking were RG and Garoppolo simply not getting rid of the football fast enough. For most of his passing plays like the 35 yarder to Pettis he had plenty of time to throw.

Totally agree with this. The loss of speed with those two has really bogged down this offense. All those intermediate routes will be wide open again as soon as Goodwin gets healthy.
As Goodwin impacts offensive opportunity, so does Foster in defense. Not having either of them playing really hurts.

Yeah, I agree about JG. He's a bit of a deer in headlights right now. It's certainly not all on the OL. But the OL may be a huge reason why he's hesitating and doesn't feel comfortable. It's been like that for 7 games. Other QB's we watch, hardly ever get touched (Stafford was pretty close today) . It's frustrating in comparison.

This makes a ton of sense and I didn't think about until this point until now: explains why Goodwin became Jimmy's favorite target, more than likely he was the first to get open in the progression because he could come in and out of his routes much more quickly.

Its like Hill in KC. You can play perfect coverage 99% of the time but if he gets a step on you, there's a good chance that its going to be a big play down the field so teams have to keep note on where he is on the field at all times. This naturally opens up opportunities for other players on the offense.

You're more willing to give up 7 or 8 yards to Trent Taylor on the slant than to risk Goodwin taking it to the house because he flew past your CB and there was no help deep.

My guess would be that the offense has more to do with that than the OL. Last year he gave f**k all about blocking, he had a worse OL, he was letting it rip because he wasn't thinking since they were running a very rudimentary offense. Go watch Matt Ryan with the Falcons in 2015 and there were the same complaints from Falcons fans that wanted Shanahan canned. "Ryan doesn't look the same, he's freezing up, he's not throwing it as quickly, he looks worse than ever...." I think it is a by-product of a guy still getting comfortable with a complex offense.
That's probably why slants we're not open for Taylor.

Have faith guys
Taylor sucks .he had 2 drops today o rested no thank you

1. Worst tackling I've ever seen
2. O-line just as bad as last year? Made a Anseh-less Lions defense look like the Vikings
3. Wide receivers not getting open
4. Awful red zone play and no well put-together drives; benefited from a huge kick return and Breida's TD
5. The serious confidence they over-achieved with in the last 5 games this year is now the reverse--they're playing even worse than they are...like a team that's scared and is no longer buying into their own hype and, instead, realizing "hey, we're really not good".
6. Injuries, injuries, injuries

Can we also talk about how much they had to rely on Stafford over-throwing and Lions receivers dropping the ball? That bailed them out A LOT.

This is a really BAD team.

Looks and plays like a Mike Nolan six-win team. The front office and staff need to be scrutinized for doing almost nothing other than lucking in to Garoppolo who looks like he'd rather be elsewhere too.

We got bailed out by penalties too. JG threw a really bad pass at a crucial time. The Lions pretty much beat themselves.
