Week 1 2018 - Thoughts after rewatching the game...

Overall, i was amazed at just how good MN defense was. I had seen it last yr, but just didn't appreciate how good it is. The fact we had goofs and still were in it with a minute to go...amazing. To play a team like MN and still just be a gnat's eyelash away from winning...that is a sizeable moral victory. And all that with loss of both RGs, same for best WR, and then lost Coyle. Did GArcon get hurt or not. Can;t recall. Anyway, in view of all the above, we played darn well, and with either of or two OGs and with Goodwin all game...would love to see how that came out. Our guys did just fine. Sure tackling was lousy for some, and DBs never got turned around on TDs, but still with all that, we were in it at the end. And THAT is amazing.

This team may end up being as good as I thot, with my 12-4 record not happening...but overall...we almost beat a #1 D in the league who has a good O also. No tears shed by me, except for injuries. And those i hope play next week Also, imagine #48 AND #56 side by side. I think that pair would have made the difference in that game. Man is that ever going to be spectacular. #48 has all the makings of a Kuechly. really.
Remember last November when the Vikings beat the Lambs (24-7) with Case Keenum leading the team? That was cool.

The Vikings game IN Minn might have been the toughest game on the entire schedule and they didn't get embarrassed.

I for one am not too upset with this one as there were positives if you realize that all the hype in the off-season was a bit premature. The team we saw yesterday likely won't be the same team we see in several weeks here. Should be fun to watch. :D

This.
I fully expected the 49ers to lose this game. We all knew the OL was going to have a huge learning curve under the best of circumstances, and MIN has a VERY good Defense.
I hoped for no injuries and not get embarrassed. 1 out of 2.
Hope the injuries aren't too bad.
All I know is Ferrari or Fred at MIL and we let Malcolm Smith heal his vagina for the rest of the year.
I wonder if coyles rough outing is the reason they are bringing in some linebackers?

For real though.

This is a dumb analogy and I may get made fun of.

But, in Madden mark nezchoke is a 68. They may not be experts and who knows but man...it can't hurt to try and bring in some other talent?

The LBs that the 49ers are working out are LEO/OLB. Edge rushers. I made the same mistake thinking Coyle or Malcolm Smith were going on IR. Elijah Lee didn't look too bad. Made a nice clean tackle on the Cousins scramble stopping him short on 3rd down. But then Solomon effed all that up.
Anyone have a count of which WR Sherman covered and for how many snaps a piece he faced each of there WR?

If they are contenders for LEO then that is a Dakota Watson replacement.

Which makes sense, as that should be the priority after Watson went on IR.

I don't remember his name being mentioned even once...

I guess that's a good thing.

It looks like Coyle is the latest whipping boy around here.

Ward? Played 5 snaps and instantly gave up a key 3rd down. He did his job.
Thoughts? Detroit is a VERY winnable game next week at home. 1-1

I agree with everything you said except the Pettis drop in the end zone. The ball hit the defenders arm first and the defender had his arm lodged in between Pettis' arms. Could he have caught it? Sure, he almost did. But that play was more about the great coverage than Pettis pulling a Vance McD. If he had caught that ball it would have been more impressive than the TD he did catch.

Agree. The DB made a great play on that ball. Sometimes, you just have to give credit to the DB - that play wasn't on Pettis IMO and would have been a great catch for the TD if he came up with it.

Not sure about that. Excellent concentration but had both hands on it tucked into his body but not strong enough to hold on throughout once he hit the ground. Good defensive play too as he had his arm in there as well.

Being that Pettis is smaller, he's gotta high point these passes and reel them in. Waiting for the ball to drop into his basket don't work in the nfl. That play in the end zone was def his fault.

He also took extra steps on the 2nd INT. All in all up and down game exarcebated by Goodwin's injury and garçon playing so-so. The garçon drop in the end zone was not his fault. Defender hit him early, plus gropp threw the ball late. TV coverage showed shanahan telling gropp he's gotta rip it. Knew that shoulda been a TD.

Still liked what I saw from Pettis and the team in general. You're either getting better or getting worse, amirite? This team will be really clicking second half of the season as long as they stay healthy.
