Yep. I'm monitoring that too WRATH. Would love to see some more coaching/development staff here for that.

Same.

Also, I may have missed it but Woods is a disciple of Wade Phillips. Wasn't Wade Phillips Kyle's #1 DC target but lost him d/t to the timing of the Superbowl?

I thought he wanted Gus Bradley, but I could be wrong. Getting older sucks. It's those damn kids with their rap music. What was I saying? Who are you? Where was I going? Where am I? GET THE HELL OFF OF MY DAMN LAWN OR I'LL LET MY DOGS OUT!

Nailed it!

Yes,I always thought there was a strong connection with Phillips and the Shanahan's...thought I read somewhere he was Kyle's top choice but Gus after that. Don't quote me on that.

The names I remember were Gus Bradley whom the niners were willing to pay handsomely to get after Cable was dropped from consideration, then Fangio but the Bears wouldn't release him from his contract. Brian Flores name got tossed out there then Saleh and Jerome Henderson.

I don't remember Philips ever being linked to Kyle.

He wasn't.

Rams and McVay had already announced Phillips - Shanahan was still preparing for the Falcons Superbowl.

Yeah, my recollection was hints before the Superbowl and before Wade committed to McVay. Post Superbowl, yeah, Bradly, Fangio, etc. It might have just been a suggested tweet or something but Wade committed pretty quickly.
But the bigger question is, how is Woods going to help evolve this defense? If he's a Wade disciple...

I don't need him to evolve too much as long as he flicks Saleh in the nuts every time he has an idea like "let's give Buckner some snaps at safety"

Taking Saleh's job by the bye week I guess

He has been around long enough, and seen enough stuff, to not get locked into just one thing.

Woods is more rooted in the Kiffin disciple tree whom was with him in Tampa (his first NFL job). Then he followed Tomlin to Minnesota who also had worked under Kiffin for a number of years when he went to the Vikings.

Woods has been lucky to be exposed over a number of years to different defensive philosophies since Tomlin went to Pittsburgh. My hope is that he can better diversify our coverages.
Honestly, I don't think the team needs diverse or exotic coverages. They need a coach to teach the players how to play each coverage instinctively. Imo, the team was hurt more by busts than by scheme.

FIFY!!

Don't get me confused. I agree in principle. Technique, pressure, and development will help more than anything and I wasn't implying that the scheme was the biggest problem of our defense. Health and pressure will do wonders. This scheme is proven to be effective with the right players in place.

All I'm saying is Woods has good exposure in working with multiple schemes and I'd like to see some extra wrinkles thrown out there, otherwise why even add the extra responsibility of "passing game coordinator." Which usually means your spending extra time scouting opposition's passing attacks and giving extra input of how to defend it. His diverse background in defensive schematics over the last 10 years is nice to have and I don't wanna see it waisted.

I'm not asking for some O'Neill level mad scientist white board wizardry that turns into mass confusion on the field, just some extra wrinkles here and there.

Lol everytime I think of O'Neil I get reminded of this scene from Celtic Pride.
