Yep. Kyle reportedly tried to hire Manuel as DC when he was hired but Atlanta shut that down. I'd be surprised to not see him brought in considering their prior relationship.

Maybe he would be more willing to move on from Saleh if he could promote within?

Hafley out, who's in? A number of young DBs on this roster that need development (TMoore, Colbert, Reed, Harris, Spoon). This seems like a very important hire being that Saleh's background is LBs. Some names that have been mentioned as possible replacements:

Marquand Manuel (fired as ATL DC):
- 8 year safety in NFL; 7 years coaching, 2 as DC
- ATL runs a similar scheme to the 49ers

Steve Wilks (fired as ARI HC):
- 12 total seasons as DB coach (CHI, LAC, CAR); 1 year DC; 1 year HC
- predominantly zone scheme in CAR

Perry Fewell:
- 12 years DB coach
- 9 years DC (BUF, NYG)

Manuel is probably the easiest fit since he's younger.
Fewell and Wilks might be seen as replacement DCs if they get the assistant DC/HC tag. Not sure they are familiar enough with the current staff to just take a DB-only role.

Makes sense. Manuel has been coaching in this scheme for all his coaching years (SEA then ATL). Isn't so experienced where he won't 'settle' for a position coach gig. Knows Kyle.
I like Wilks for his experience and the work he's done with guys like Josh Norman, Antonio Cromartie, Eric Weddle, Peanut Tillman to name a few. He can be someone Saleh can lean on if needed.

Manuels also isn't obsessed with beanstalk corners. Maybe he'll expand Saleh's mind.

I wonder if that's a Dan Quinn thing, drafting CBs under 6'. But yeah, no need for CBs to be a mandatory 6'2+. When the SEA CBs were allowed to grab and hold it was a good way to cover a WR. These CBs need to be more agile nowadays and being 6'2 doesn't help.

I like Wilks too. Despite the one season as HC, IMO he's got the chops to be a leader. Maybe he can complement Embree as an assistant HC. And aside from coaching DBs, maybe he can get Saleh to be more aggressive. It'd be similar to Norton, where he comes in to coach LBs and evangelize the need for aggression.

But the question is how Wilks meshes with the staff. Wilks seems more ambitious than Norton. Also, how do his ideas mesh with the scheme?

I'm all for getting Manuel on the defensive side of the ball

Wilks would be my preference IF he was willing to take the secondary coach job. He's still being paid by Arizona for the next three years so he can afford to be very picky though.

I'm fine with Manuel. There's actually some track record of success there in working with young DBs. He also did a good job as defensive coordinator last year so potentially a guy that can be groomed if Saleh flops. Beyond that, Sherman and Earl Thomas(fingers crossed) would obviously be familiar with him.
This is where Lynch should have a big impact, since you're looking for a position coach for his former position. I don't know whether he played a direct role in the hiring of the former DB coach, but he had to have had some serious indigestion watching that backfield all season.

Yup Manuel or Wilks could be replacements if Saleh can't get it together and a change is needed asap.....but I'm sure Wilks could find a better gig than DB coach and why would Manuel want to come here??

Open spot for DB coach and Manuel's an unemployed DB coach
Familiar with the scheme and Saleh
It's a fairly young staff, so there's opportunity for growth/promotion

-He's unemployed after being fired by Atlanta and the 49ers have an opening for a DB coach.

-They run the same scheme that he's spent his entire coaching career working in.

-He's worked with both Shanahan and Saleh previously.

As I recall, Falcons were pretty ravaged by injuries to key starters on defense (DBs too). I'm not sure how they fared when healthy with his coaching. If he can make them much better I'm down. Him and Sherman working with the youngsters...
