Interesting that the Niners are creating all this cap space that they don't need. Is there some big trade in the works that is going to come out of nowhere? For a DE possibly? Or one they might think of making during the season and want to be prepared. What if this is a trade for Reddick who is holding out?

It's an odd maneuver, that's for sure. I would think this doesn't have anything to do with Purdy because his cap hit will be low during the first year or two after his extension. I also don't think a trade is in the works. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Same.

I'll wait to see their plan but this doesn't seem like a smart move.

Deebos good at football. Keeping good football players is smart

I think it's a lot to do with next year and rolling the cap over. I'm sure they want to keep some open cap space as well this season in case they trade for someone during the trade deadline.

But this Deebo one is surprising because now it looks like he might be here for a couple more years.

But overall we have a lot of good players who will be FAs:

Ward
Greenlaw
Feliciano
Hufanga
Banks
Demo

I expect one of the CBs to be gone, Banks most likely as well, and then either Huf or Greenlaw

Purdy's cap hit next year should be around 15-20 mil (after the extension)

So if we are left with 30-35 mil after that, that will basically cover 2 premier players

Well you gotta put a team together with the salary cap. I don't think it's smart paying our two stud receivers 50 mil while investing a 1st rd pick in a WR, having Cowing that is looking good so far and also Jennings. We need to put resources in other more glaring areas next year.

No he was just reporting a couple different restructures

Not sure what Deebo's cap hit is next yr but BA's is only $11M.

Again, I am no cap expert, so someone correct me if i am wrong, but this does seems weird. Why create so much cap space for this season? Doesn't this just give us less options with the players restructured in the future? Why create even more cap space for the season that we don't need? It does seem like we have done this in the past though, So there might be some sort of benefit in doing it that I don't understand.

It can roll over to next year.

I'm definitely not an expert but I think it does two things:

1). Plan A - allows for a huge rollover into next season to free up money to give Purdy a huge signing bonus and then stretch out his cap number, then leaves some extra for some of the other FA's

2). Plan B - if things go sideways with injuries or they feel they need another piece to get over the hump they have extra room to add some guys during the season.

I have to think the Niners are ALL IN this season. Every possible talented player who might come up on the trade market will have the Niners calling first to try to grab something.

While I'm sure they need to plan for the future, I'm positive Lynch and ownership see this as the last great chance to win a SB before the level of difficulty ramps up even higher next year with cap casualties and some vets getting another year older.

I know you can roll it over but would that roll over create more cap room for next season VS. Not restructuring Deebo though?
