I agree that moves are done usually because they lost the agility and/or speed, but I did not mean moving him to prevent injuries, but he will likely lower his chances at getting injured with the switch and having him on the field making plays is what you want. At his size, he will not have to battle the bigger wr like he does as a CB. At FS he will be helping to pick off the wr like a sniper or spy from that position and be more in line to make a play for or on the ball.

As for this team, I don't see why he can't make the transition, especially as the FS.

Both his injuries were non contact injuries. He's a special cornerback and your suggesting putting him at FS which isn't an easy position by any means. Verretts abilities to drive on routes and mirror routes is what made him so good. At FS your reading the guard then QB/receivers.

I agree learning a new position is not easy, but CB is harder to play. Learning to play FS is a lot easier. Many who have transitioned successfully were also very good at CB, because he will know and understand what his mates in front of him are thinking and go thru. it comes down to if they want to. As for reading he will be peering and seeing the whole field. His ability to drive on a route, tenacious ness to attack the ball is what you want, especially when coming over the top and the wr is busy with the defender assigned to him or his area.
LOL. It shouldn't be too hard.

Would be so epic to have him healthy and lock down opposite Sherman. Witherspoon can take his time learning from two great starters.
Will he be healthy to take part in OTAs? Or are we holding him out till training camp?

I just strongly disagree with moving him to FS. He's a elite level talent at CB why mess with that? I'd say Sherman is closer to moving to FS than Verrett.

I'd imagine he will be full go for OTAs. But maybe they will take it slow with him.

I've given up hope for Witherspoon personally. I don't think he has the physical state of mind for football. He's got the atheletic side for sure but the little bit of crazy you need he doesn't seem to possess.

CB usually move to FS not to prevent injury but because they no longer have the speed and agility. FS requires to make big hits, so you can't prevent injury by switching to FS.
However cover 3 requires speedy FS, so if Varrett no longer run fast due to his various injury he can try FS, but probably not with this team.

In Fangio's defense the two safeties are interchangeable. That is definitely not the case for a cover 3 defense.
I don't know that playing FS decreases the chance of injury compared to CB.

Exactly. I would think if the Niners told him they would move him to FS before agreeing on the contract, he wouldn't have come to the Niners as long as he has other reasonable contract offer that are close to what the Niners offered.

His problem is staying healthy. We don't know how good he is at the moment. If he play this coming season and show he can no longer play CB then perhaps he can try playing FS.

After all, I don't know that playing FS decreases the chance of injury compared to CB.

It's true Whitherspoon is a bum. Only one that might give him a run for his money is Tarvarius Moore he came along nicely after we had all these injuries late in the year.

Boner alert
Other than Sherman, there isn't one reliable player in the secondary. Hopefully with the added pass rush help it'll mask some of these guys. Idk how much help we will get from the draft given other needs.
