I think if healthy Matthews has the potential to be exactly what we have been missing, especially in the redzone. I mean he has a direct line to his cousin, Jerry Rice, and if he can be even 80 percent of what Rice was that would be a huge win for us.

Dude, 80% of Rice is still a HOFer.

You know this signing sucks when the only positive is that he's related to JR.

These guys are all going to compete, I think Pettis is the only one guaranteed a roster spot.
The odd one out will either be cut, traded or put on the practice squad.
Kyle has said he wants competition, the WR and RB groups have it down, we want more across the board.

This. Pre-season for those squads should be high energy and fun to watch.

Competition is good. Continually challenging our players is not just good, it's necessary. I hope we bring in another WR during the draft too.

That reasoning is silly.

If he was 80% of Rice he would be an all pro already.

I still maintain that I think we'll draft one with our second round pick.

Yeah, no s**t. Not sure why anybody has any real expectations of Matthews. If he makes the roster it will be a surprise.

I think it was a good low value signing. Most people remember him from his first Philly run and are hoping the last couple of seasons are a wash due to injury. I think if anybody can get his career back on path it's Kyle.
With that said, I think with or without Mathews, it doesn't change the need to go receiver early in the draft imo. I still think a receiver in the second round is very possible.

Despite his 6-foot-3, 212 frame, Matthews' bread and butter in the league has come in the slot. During his time as an Eagle (2014-16), Pro Football Focus notes that no receiver had more yards than Matthews out of the slot. Matthews also had three straight seasons in Philly of over 800 yards receiving and over 65 catches with 2015 proving to be his most productive totaling 85 catches for 997 yards and eight touchdowns.
Along with the slot, Matthews could be an impact pass catcher in the red zone for New England. Over the course of his career, he's been able to haul in 28 of his 45 targets in the red zone for 15 touchdowns.

Big red zone target and an upgrade in the slot. Another smart move by our front office.
Love it. Can't get mad at a potential RZ target for that price. Im tired of seeing the team kick a field goal every time we get close. Ive never been so nervous inside the 5 as last season.

I think people's confidence here on Matthews' ability is overblown when you look at his actual production. To me the brought in another training camp body to compete for a starting job, but he is not the long term answer at WR.

He has more production than any of our other receivers though.
Not the long term answer, obviously. Still need to draft a WR at 36.

That is my hope. I think it makes sense.
