I think people's confidence here on Matthews' ability is overblown when you look at his actual production. To me the brought in another training camp body to compete for a starting job, but he is not the long term answer at WR.

He has more production than any of our other receivers though.

Not the long term answer, obviously. Still need to draft a WR at 36.

He's already our #1 because he's big.

I will be optimistic and hope he makes it through preseason cuts, with hopefully another young piece added in the 2nd round.

I do not want Bourne as our #1 receiver going into 2019......

agree.. i think the value of our current wide outs are over valued and over blown by some of the fans
Great wideouts don't win championships. Jerry Rice did but the entire Niner team was great.

That is absolute nonsense, our best WR is our #1, not our biggest.

More like a #4 or #5. Being big has jackcrap to do with being a #1 WR.

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't end up making the roster ultimately.
Kyle signed Jordan Matthews to throw a bone to the big-body WR crew so they don't complain when he drafts Andy Isabella.

Wouldn't be shocked at all, tbh.

I prefer the term size queens!
The reason Jordan flourishes from the slot is because he causes match up problems and not as much on the outside. Kyle will make use of him if he makes the team. Especially in the red zone where the D may key in on Kittle and others more than him. That is all you can hope and want.

As others have said, if there is a potential Boldin type in the 2nd that can play on the outside, get him.

Thats what I thought as soon as I heard about the signing.

"You wanted a BIG WR? Here you go, now STFU while I go get this dude that breaks DB ankles."

I think if healthy Matthews has the potential to be exactly what we have been missing, especially in the redzone. I mean he has a direct line to his cousin, Jerry Rice, and if he can be even 80 percent of what Rice was that would be a huge win for us.

Dude, 80% of Rice is still a HOFer.

If you go by career receiving TDs or receiving yards, no player in history is 80% of Jerry.
