Does Dante Pettis have the talent and potential to be a #1 WR for this team?

Pettis showed he had the skills in college, and still flashes them... Occasionally. I just don't think his mind is right about the game at this level. He isn't getting something straight. If he hasn't by now what are the odds he will? This isn't a case of a receiver that hasn't has good coaching, that doesn't have professional role modes around him on the team to look at how practice and study are done, how you have to be 100 % on every snap. It just looks like he is mailing it in as often as he gives it all he has. Maybe it was a case of him having superior skills in college against his competition but he can't boost it to the NFL level. I don't know what it is, but something isn't clicking for him. I had high hopes for him but they have faded.

I don't think Shanny wants another year of this with Pettis - he's a goner next year.

Agreed. The worst case for a wrong negative take is..."damn, we got another good player"

I dont know why anyone who thinks one of our players sucks would want to be proven right rather than proven wrong. I hope Solomon Thomas is the next Aaron Donald and all of my past posts look foolish. That would be the best case for everyone.

How do you explain the several posters who are like ghosts when polarizing players (Pettis, Thomas, Garoppolo, etc.) play well and/or the team wins, but then they show up spewing negativity and "I told you so's" when those same players struggle and/or the team loses?

Edit: For the record, I'm talking about the posts themselves, not the posters. There are very few (if any now that KittleSkittle is gone) that are 100% negative all the time.

I cant speak for others. Some people are just more comfortable dealing with the negative. You familiar with Salty Balty? He would say stuff like, "yeah we just won the world series, but..."

Some people like to complain. Doesnt mean they are rooting against our players/team. I actually think it's quite an absurd claim. I want Pettis to be the next Marvin Harrison, sans the guns, and Solomon Thomas to be the next Aaron Donald. But that doesnt mean I dont think they are both worthless currently, nor that I want them to continue to be trash for the sake of validation. That's beyond silly.

You, I agree. You still didn't answer my question though.

He needs to survive this year or he'll never get a chance here to be the next Jerry.

And for the record, there is absolutely no reason Pettis shouldnt be able to become at least a good #2. He is a little soft, but he checks all the rest of the boxes. Runs good routes. Is quick. Has great hands. The talent is there. Hopefully the head/heart catch up.

Yeah, he possess everything - he just needs to get his head on straight.
I'm still trying to figure out what the issue is with him. He has made some plays and then nothing. Is he not getting separation or beating jams? Running the wrong routes? Not fighting for the ball?

All of the above pretty much.
The best people in practice are sometimes the worst in crunch time. I have seen the best soldiers become useless in battle and the useless become gods. It's battle and it brings a proving ground you can't prepare for unless your mentality ready. Pettis is fighting the battle in his head and until he has that straight he can't grow. Your only forged in fire when your metal is ready. His problem is his coach knows this and he himself hasn't grasped it yet. These men on the field are a majority of warriors. Who's playing hurt? Who fights to play while hurt? These people are warriors. They will tear themselves apart to play and win. They can't be anything else. Give them respect because most wont or can't. Pettis is being tested and failing because his mind is currently week. He can't find the strength in himself to overcome. That's what a coach is looking for. IMHO

I think Pettis will get another TC. If he still shows the same attitude or lack of availability with injuries, he'll be gone. Very much like Garnett.

Kyle stayed with Garnett giving him chances to show his worth. But he never really take advantage of them. I see Pettis doing the same thing. Not taking advantage of his opportunities. At some point Kyle won't give anymore, like currently, the last few games.

I'm going to chalk up this season to a sophomore slump, similar to Witherspoon. I'm not ready to give up on him. Dude can get open, He has to work on hitting his spot on time. Going to take dedication. We will see.

I hope you're right and it's just maturity vs. character. You can't change character.

That's a great comparison. Gets challenged, in and out of the lineup, all these little nagging injuries, strings it out on ability alone / 5 years of collecting paychecks - zero productivity. Won the lottery.

Why is this thread eleven pages long? The answer is no

Because the regular Pettis thread got closed. I can't say why without ripping some posters. The post number in this thread has nearly doubled today.

On topic, Pettis could be a number 1, but I seriously doubt it ever happens.

It's still open.

It never closed. People just like to talk about disappointing players (see also: Solomon Thomas, Arik Armstead for 4 years, Jimmie Ward for 5, etc.).
