Does Dante Pettis have the talent and potential to be a #1 WR for this team?

I say yes. Excellent route running, elite separation, exceptional hands. He high points the ball and plucks it at the last instant, not giving the defender a chance to make a play. Great ability at making defenders miss once he has the ball, and his stiff-arm is mean. Of course the question is his durability and health, but I think with how the rules are changing, he's the perfect WR, especially in Shanahan's system.

Boy were you wrong

Seems like it right now, but I'm still rooting for him since he's a Niner. Are you?

Last year Pettis showed those traits.

This year Pettis has not.

You assume this year is the norm while Furlow assumed last year was the norm. Why are you right?
it is more than quik stats stuff. mentally as of late, he seems to be out of it. not taking advantage of opportunities and as a result. we have seen those opportunities decrease while bourne steps up. do you think he just opted to take the rest of the year off? and do we just say ho hum. thats ok. that happens. i think its a simple matter he thrived last year with no actual competition. he has some now and is either unable or unwilling to step up and rise to the occasion. that stuff will get you into a coaches dog house. like it has
I don't disagree, man. I have been disappointed and surprised by how he's gone to hell this year. I'm still hoping he can get his act together but it probably won't be this year.

Perhaps you need to root harder, it doesn't seem to be working.

Yah I root for every niner player when the game is on.

no one here roots for a player to fail. that is just another fallacy in my opinion. i have never rooted for pettis to fail. he has just been taking care of that himself
Pettis has the talent and potential what he doesn't have is the work ethic or the drive.

Not peep about a Pettis

Ouch. Public call out from a seasoned veteran WR.

This poll needs to be re-released. I think the results would be dramatically different from what they were way back in March.
Hopefully Sanders spends alot of time with him this offseason.
I'm glad he also publicly praised the guys who have stepped up to the challenge:

"I'll tell you what, K.B. and Deebo, man, they're special," Sanders said. "Watch how those guys catch the football. Watch how they run through the football. Those guys can score at any moment. That's who they are. They're just wired to catch the football really well.

"My job is to let them understand the importance, because they've never been in this situation. But I don't want them to lose their personality and who they are. I want them to treat every single play like it could be the last play of the game and everything is on the line. They're cool dudes and humble dudes. I've been enjoying being around them."

That would require SF giving sanders a new contract...hope you're right

People tend to fall back to the "you are rooting against him to prove your point" fallacy when their argument starts to look more and more silly. It's similar to calling someone a hater.

Well several posters on the zone exhibit traits that demonstrate that they would rather be right about a player not being good enough than actually rooting for them to succeed. NO ONE is arguing that Dante Pettis is currently a #1 WR. Some of us are simply stating that he has the ability to be one, and we hope that he becomes one. Others are saying it's a 100% certainty that it will never happen. When you cling to an argument with that much negativity, you invite criticism from fans who love their team and players above being "right."

For me, talent has never been a question. I saw him a lot in college and he was a beast. If his qb had more arm strength, his numbers woulda been even better.

The drive for playing in the nfl is what I don't think he has. I thought we had a number one WR last year... I just don't think it's in him.

Still frustrates me that Richie James isn't getting more run. Pettis is nowhere near these guys:

Sanders
Deebo
Kendrick
Richie

We don't need anyone other wideout barring injury... I would rather see Pettis than Goodwin, I guess
