I'm not the least bit confident in our secondary. Hopefully, the pass rush will help them look good.

Yea im terrified of our secondary

Apparently UDFA Alex Brown is turning heads. If he's as good as has been reported (Warner isn't the only person raving about the guy), we have several newcomers who could certainly impact the final depth chart in Brown, Verrett and Tim Harris. Moore belongs at safety and Reed wasn't particularly noticeable outside of kick return ability.. although with costly fumbling. Mabin should be easy to beat out, so I'd be concerned if someone can't outplay him.

As usual, this is a very well thought out post, AB... After really looking at this, I'm encouraged. This roster has talent at virtually every position and certainly decent depth. Of course, there are question marks (interior OL, safety, LB depth overall for example) but compared to just 2 years ago, this is a vastly improved roster.

A few players that I found interesting in your final 53.....Garnett, Bourne, DJ Reed, and Tim Harris. All of these players, IMHO, will have to show improvement in training camp or risk getting cut (or put on the practice squad in the case of Harris) I'm also concerned that if one of those starting LBs (Warner and / or Alexander goes down, there isn't really anybody that can adequately replace them. Nzeocha and Mayo are ST guys. That stated, I don't think that Malcolm Smith should make the team so I am on the same page with you there.

I also think that Alex Brown can potentially push a CB right off of the roster. I was just looking at his numbers and that guy is an incredible athlete with really long arms and speed to burn. He could challenge for a spot on the 53. Ross Reynold is another guy I can see making the final 53 too, perhaps over Garnett.

Cheers guys!

AB, I hope Day makes the squad. I'm not sure who I would bump off, but I think that Day is a gamer.

Day not only makes team, he starts at the nose.

I'm not as knowledgable with the new Wide 9 as others are, so Day making it over Jones wouldn't surprise me, but I'd hate to cut Jones. Maybe "stash" someone on IR, or PUP.

Jones makes the 53 imo.

Also, I think Lynch would trade Solomon in a minute if we could get anything for him.

Imagine if we could get an upgrade at RG for Armstead or Thomas!!

Edit: or any of our extra DL or WR really; I'm not as down on Thomas as some and I know Armstead is valuable as a run-stopper...

I'd say DJ Reed is pretty much a lock. I dont think Garnett gets cut but if they get a decent offer they'll trade him. I see him staying though.

Bourne will come down to a numbers game but definitely needs to have a good camp.
I know Mayo is supposed to be an ST assassin, but they seem so light at LB. There are barely 3 guys that should be starting there.

Sherman
Verret
Witherspoon
Williams
Reed
Harris
Brown

Honestly doesn't look that bad at CB to me.

At FS Ward, Colbert and Moore is a trio that at least has talent. Of course we know they have question marks. I actually think we just may make it through this year OK in the secondary. One underrated thing nobody is talking about is how hungry all of these guys must be. They've all got something to prove in some way:

Sherm that he's still one of the best,
Verret that he can resurrect his career,
Spoon that he can be a legit NFL starter or better—he's got the talent, how bad does he want it?;
Ward knowing this could be his last shot in the NFL, Colbert that he is as good or better than he's shown in spurts, Moore just as a young guy trying to make it... All these guys should be majorly motivated this year. Not to mention this kind of competition is contagious. Here's hoping for a couple of good surprises to come out of this group

As long as Warner and Alexander stay healthy, we'll be fine. We can only hope that Greenlaw will have a decent year, but it would be nice if he had a Warner type rookie year.

Any combination of Greenlaw, Mayo, Nzeocha and Lee constantly on the field is not enticing whatsoever
Is the kicker still a go? What is our depth like there if he doesnt?

LB's are the RB's of the defense. They are a dime a dozen and there will be plenty of options available during the cuts prior to the season.

Man...I hope you are right. Outside of Warner and Alexander (who still has to prove he will be healthy), and a couple of good ST guys, this seems like a pretty thin group to me. Greenlaw is a 5th round rookie and Malcolm Smith can't stay healthy. It is a good thing that Elijah Lee is looking good because he will probably be a starter in some games this year.

Cheers!

While much can change over the course of a season, on the surface it seems like the top two areas that need to be addressed are the linebackers and the interior OL. The secondary would be the third area, but it heavily depends on how the new blood does there, as well as whether Moore takes over at FS and/or Colbert starts and plays more like he did in year one.

Couldn't agree more, OTC... Let's hope that guys like Ross Reynolds, Ben Garland, Magnuson, and of course, Garnett can provide some quality depth. On paper at least, that looks a lot better than last year.

If he can stay healthy, Richburg should be a lot better this year. He was heavily criticized last year but the guy was playing hurt...really hurt. He should have been commended for gutting it out rather than given a lot of grief.

I've already ranted about the LB situation so I'll leave that for now...

Cheers!

Week 1 Inactives: WR Bourne, TE Smith, OG Garnett, OT Skule, DE Blair, CB Harris, FS Colbert

Bourne has the second most snaps and second most receiving yards of the WRs in Shanny's system, while the most raw WR on the team is Hurd. If the top-6 is healthy, Bourne should be active ahead of Hurd. I'd be surprised though if one of the other four won't start the season banged up to some extent.
I think if Garnett can snatch the RG job away from person, our depth will look pretty darn good.

Could see our groupings looking like:

LT: Staley / Skule (swing T)
LG: Tomlinson / Garland
C: Richburg / Person
RG: Garnett / Garland
RT: McGlinchey / SKule

Wouldn't be surprised if Wesley Johnson made a push though. They might consider him because he can play OT as well in a pinch. Same could be said for Magnuson if he show improvement. He can play C/OG/RT also.

Nickel is played 70% of the time or thereabouts. Some of our DE's can sub in at LB in short yardage. Also the NFC west, we have 6 games against some pass happy teams that pretty much stay at 3 WR set most (if not all) of the time.
