I have no clue what we're gonna do still. Things always get hazier after the 2nd pre-season game. Still need 2 more to see. So this is what I'm going with now:
QB: (2) Garoppolo, Mullens
HB: (4) Breida, Coleman, McKinnon, Mostert
FB: (1) Juice
TE: (3) Kittle, Dwelley, Smith (Toilolo if he's healthy)
WR: (6) Pettis, Samuel, Taylor, Goodwin, Hurd, James
OL: (8) Staley, Tomlinson, Person, McGlinchey, Young, Garnett, Richburg, Johnson
DL: (10) Ford, Buckner, Bosa, Armstead, Thomas, Givens, Street, Taylor, Blair, Jones
LB: (6) Warner, Alexander, Greenlaw, Smith, Nzeocha, Mayo
DB: (10) Sherman, Witherspoon, Verrett, Williams, Reed, Moseley, Moore, Tartt, Exum, Ward
K: (1) Gould
P: (1) Wishnowsky
LS: (1) Holba
IR: S.Coleman (ankle), Colbert (hamstring), D.Moore (thumb), Celek (back, head)
Notes:
1. I like Bourne, I really do. But.. simply put, James is too valuable to let go of due to his reliability and effectiveness on kick and punt returns. I can't be the only one here terrified watching Pettis struggle to track punts in the air. I think we will trade Bourne for anything we can possibly get for him. Since he can't return kicks, his value is in the fact that he can play all WR spots, but so can Pettis, Hurd, and Deebo. Unless we find a way to keep 7, I just don't see Bourne or Matthews making it.
2. At safety, if we're only going with 4, then all four need to be able to play both safety spots. I like Marcell Harris, but he can't. Can we sneak him onto the PS if cut? Unlikely. Another potential trade candidate, in my opinion.
3. I know we guaranteed money to Garland, but he's been horrendous not only in practice, per reports, but also in games. If he can't do the job -- why keep him around? It's limited action we've seen, but it's been almost all negative. Not only has Wesley Johnson been the better player, he can play every spot on the line, including tackle. Garland can't. Garnett also had snaps at C a few times last season as well as earlier this off-season, so I just don't see Garland offering anything we don't already have with the other guys.
4. After garnering national attention, I don't see us able to hide Givens on the PS anymore. I'd keep him over Day who seems to have plateaued and might lack the high ceiling Givens has, at least based on what we've seen so far. Jones may be inactive with the knee still, but his value at NT, especially in short yardage can't be understated. He is one of the few that can eat up double-teams.
5. Players I see being stashed on IR for a potential add-back later: DE Damontre Moore (dislocated thumb is a 6-8 week injury) and S Colbert.
