If the 49ers choose to place Jerick McKinnon on injured reserve/designated to return, and Weston Richburg on either reserve/PUP or injured reserve/designated to return, I would keep Ross Reynolds in place of Richburg, and one of the following in place of McKinnon, Jeff Wilson Jr., LaRoy Reynolds, Azeez Al-Shaair, D.J. Jones, or Kendrick Bourne, also if they decide to just IR/DFR McKinnon, and not PUP Richburg, than I can see them keeping Ross Reynolds in McKinnon's place.

Also unless Garrett Celek is able to pass a physical before final cuts, I don't think the 49ers can cut him and save any cap room, as he would likely file a grievance to get his $1.65M base salary.

We have to pay Shon Coleman's $2.005M salary while he's on IR.

I can see Daniel Brunskill being the PS Tackle over Skule.
I'm mentally preparing myself for Richie James, Kendrick Bourne, and Nick Mullens to be cut/traded to keep CJ Beathard and Jordan Matthews.

Why do you have DJ Jones on IR, did he get hurt?

You're missing Solomon Thomas, also Shon Coleman is on IR, not PUP.

Meant to have Thomas on there. Only had 52. Yeah, confused on IR and PUP. Thanks for the clarity.

AB81 - I like your idea of IR'ing McKinnon and retaining Jeff Wilson.

Not bad, one question, why is DJ Jones on IR? Did he get hurt?

Yes, but they will likely cut a player who will be brought back Sunday, those players could be Levine Toilolo, Wesley Johnson, because they don't go through waivers, as they're vested veterans. Others include LaRoy Reynolds, Sam Young to name a few.

I'm with that other person who said he'd go full CCiowa if that happened.

Same here, they better not cut Mullens or trade him to keep Beathard, he's horrible.

Yes we've seen enough of Beathard

I'm a big BeatHard fan. His grandpa was one of the best. It pains me to say this, but yeah, time to move on and let him go. Great if we can trade him, but I'm Cciowa pessimistic on that issue.

I'll test myself based on what AB81 taught me last week.

I believe that it is not necessary to put a player on the initial 53 if your intent is that he is going on IR for the season. It is necessary to put him on the initial 53 to make him eligible to return during the season (no designated to return stuff anymore, IR is IR until you bring someone back).

Ha! See if AB objects to that.

Maiocco. Good nuggets:

What receivers do you see making the team (Armando Guerra)
Trent Taylor is not expected to be ready for Week 1 after undergoing surgery two weeks ago to repair a Jones fracture of his right foot. He could be a candidate for short-term injured reserve, but he still has to be carried on the initial cut to 53 players in order to be eligible to return this season. (The 49ers have said they believe he will be ready early in the season.)

I can see the 49ers keeping seven receivers to open the season in the event that Taylor can't practice or play for a couple of weeks. But who? This is where it gets tricky.

Samuel, Hurd and Pettis, for sure. Taylor looked to be on pace to be the team's top receiver before his injury. That leaves Goodwin, Matthews, Bourne and Richie James.

Goodwin should make it. Then there's a decision between Matthews and Bourne. That's difficult. Matthews does not have special-teams value, but he is more consistent than Bourne. I'd still lean toward Bourne because of his youth and his room to grow. But Shanahan made it sound this week as if Matthews had done everything he wanted to see to win a roster spot.

James could draw some attention on the trade market. Otherwise, it would be difficult for him to earn playing time with the abundance of receivers who can play in the slot.

Jimmie Ward is expected to play Saturday night in Kansas City. If he holds up, Ward is probably still the favorite to start because of his command of the defense.

Richburg is expected to begin practicing next week, and he could see some action in the preseason finale against the Chargers.

Offensive line play is a problem for every team, so I just don't foresee many solutions shaking free from the rosters around the league
I haven't had a chance to watch any games yet. Is Armstead out performing the other DEs?
Welp, that's settled. CJ's ass got saved.

I mean maybe he does. But I'd wait a week. Even Beathard is better than half the backups in the league. It ain't pretty out there
