I just don't see Mathews making it over Bourne unless there is an injury. Bourne is into the 3rd year of a very complicated offensive system. There is value in that especially since we will have 2 rookies getting significant playing time. His experience will be needed.
What you guys think about Reynolds the guard? Does he have a chance to make the 53?

I can't either, he would need to be the 5th WR, but he doesn't play STs where James, Bourne and Taylor does.

Depends on how well or bad Garnett, and Magnuson play. He has a chance.

For what it's worth, Matthews has a very good day according to multiple beat writers...

PUP: FS 20 Jimmie Ward(2019)
NFI: WLB 46 Azeez Al-Shaair(2021)
Suspended: LS 86 Kyle Nelson(2022)

Inactives: WR Bourne, TE Smith, OG Johnson, OT Skule, LEO Blair, CB Harris, SS Harris

Practice Squad:
1. QB 5 Wilton Speight
2. WR 1 Shawn Poindexter
3. WR 7 Malik Henry
4. TE 48 Tyree Mayfield
5. OG 76 Ross Reynolds
6. OG/OT 71 Willie Beavers
7. DE 77 Jullian Taylor
8. LEO 71 Jamell Garcia-Williams
9. SAM 50 Pita Taumoepenu
10. FS 45 Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

I can see them knocking off Skule, onto the psquad, and have Elijah Lee on the 53. I just don't see the team exposing Kaden Smith to waivers, or else I could see them keeping just 2 TEs.

Blair is fighting for a backup DE snaps, he's the toughest inactive, but I can't see them going 5 LBs active, they need all 6 active IMO.

Some guys with legit shots, but I need to see them play.

Ross Reynolds
Jamell Garcia-Williams
Willie Beavers
LaRoy Reynolds (over Malcolm Smith)

I also see Sheldon Day, Jullian Taylor, and Richie James are possible 53 man players. I hate cutting quality players like these 3, but it is what it is. If the team went with 8 OL, and keep 7 WRs, James is the guy I'd pick.

Great stuff. Good points too. The special teams point is a big one because of what you alluded too...it'll affect the 53/46 big time. Right now guys like Deebo and Hurd are getting mixed into the return pool with the usual suspects in Taylor, Mostert, Breida and Reed and 'maybe' Pettis since he's more accomplished now and should be able to focus mostly at the X.

I "think" they'd like to have a starter double this year so a ST-only player doesn't have to be active; that extra spot could be used for an extra lineman, skill position, etc.

I'd pay extra attention to who they have right now fielding punts/kick offs.

That looks about right. Nice to have tough decisions. Have a feeling Armstead or Thomas gets traded which might put Blair back on to the 46.

You're thinking correctly here...it's all about the 46.
How can they use the early bye to their advantage in terms of stashing players?

FYI: Mags is another one of the injured players right now. I don't know what it is though.

The blubber on the back of his neck hurts

Great stuff. Good points too. The special teams point is a big one because of what you alluded too...it'll affect the 53/46 big time. I "think" they'd like to have a starter double this year so a ST-only player doesn't have to be active; that extra spot could be used for an extra lineman, skill position, etc.

I'd pay extra attention to who they have right now fielding punts/kick offs.

I'm not even going to attempt the above until I see them play in preseason, but I cant disagree with the both posts. I think on balance there's going to be talented players cut this season, hope we can squeeze some draft capital out of it.

Oh yeah. I'll be updating as we go for sure!

It certainly 'seems' they might be prioritizing the special teams units for the first time. Wishnowsky, Mostert back, Gould and now, let's see what Hightower does with the return game.
